Rationally, I know it's better to have centipedes in the bathtub than a polar bear in the kitchen, but a surprisingly vocal irrational part of my brain is telling me I'd prefer the bear.

Actually what is called a house centipede is your friend. It kills the things that you don't actually want in your house. And while it's crawly, it does not harm people. I can't speak to polar bears. They won't let me.
