I'd never seen lightning bugs until my first trip to Ohio. One evening George said "I want you to see something" and we walked over the hill to the meadow. It was covered in lightning bugs - I was absolutely amazed and blown away by the sight. I felt as if George had filled a field full of stardust just for me.
Lovely! I miss seeing a bajillion lightening bugs like when we would visit our relatives in Delaware. I occasionally see a handful in my back yard. I'd rather have them than all the damn mosquitos.
We get them here every summer. There's nothing like sitting out on the back porch with a cold beer and watching them. It always brings me instantly back to my childhood.
I remember catching them in a Mason jar as a very young kid. And later, watching our cat flip out trying to jump at them (and occasionally catching them) in the evenings from our screened porch.
