Ooooh, that brocciblu is goooooooood. (Good name for it, too, JanetLand!)
It's my sister's birthday, so I invited her and mom over for dinner --- but my mother had already offered to take her out, so she asked us to join them instead. Sister chose one of her (and my!) favorite restaurants, right around the corner from my home.
I ordered my very favorite dish (fried polenta sticks with cheddar cream and a peppery dip) to share with the table, then for dinner I had the house-ground burger, so rare it was almost raw, which comes with house-made tater tots --- actually a creamy scoop of scallion potatoes, coated with superfine crumbs and deep-fried. SO GOOD.
It being a birthday, dessert was necessary. I had toasted brioche with a scoop of peanut butter & rum ice cream, drizzled with dark chocolate. Great balance of sweet and not-so-sweet, crispy and creamy and crunchy.
Leftover penne in pink leek sauce, or in this case not exactly pink sauce because I love leeks so much that instead of just adding the tender sauteed whites to the tomato-basil-cream sauce, I added the slightly less tender pale greens into the blender when I pureed the base, and the leeksquisite result was somewhat tangerine. One of my favorite comfort foods that they used to make at the Italian restaurant where I worked.
In a couple of days, I am going to make a massive pot of vichyssoise.
As part of my program to increase the amount of grains I eat I had Quinoa with Avocado for the first time tonight. This was from a recipe by China Forbes that I think I found by searching Ask Metafilter for quinoa. I liked it - The grainy/chewy quinoa blended with the creamy avocado, contrasted interestingly by Ponzu sauce, with some Siracha to add a bit of heat. Crumbled nori strips was another flavor vector making for a pretty complicated but thoroughly tasty dish. Will definitely have this again.
Banana bread and I'm having another slice right now. Actually, the mister brought home A&W Mozzaburgers at 4pm or so. The banana bread was ready at 6pm when we sat down to watch Fellowship of the Ring, so that's what we had at a "normal" dinner time.
Strange dinner here. Two microwaved sweet potatoes, laced with a small amount of Earth Balance "butter," and drizzled with fancy maple syrup. I had just finished a long treadmill run and it tasted like ambrosia (the food fit for gods, not the disgusting salad.)
Followed by a glass of very good sangiovese.
But I am very interested in checking out the brocchiblu in the near future.
Ha, bearwife. I microwaved a couple of sweet potatoes too. (No syrup though; just salt and smoked paprika.) I was in the middle of a long conversation with an old friend I hadn't talked to in ages. I realized I was going to have to make dinner distractedly and with one hand if I wanted to eat anything at all. That was the best thing I could come up with. It was delicious.
