01 February 2012

So yesterday was the 10 year anniversary of my arrival in the USA. I had a super busy day yesterday, but today it looks like I might just have a half day of work. I feel like doing something to mark the occasion. (Something low-key and quick.) Maybe go get some apple pie? Heh. I dunno. Ideas?[More:]

Funny thing. I came over to do a three year post-doc. And I'm still here. hrrmm.
A hamburger and spiked milkshake at the Astoria 5 napkin.

They do spiked milkshakes there, brujita? Intriguing...

Apple pie is technically English, not American. Pumpkin pie is American, but also disgusting (ymmv, of course.) I've been homesick lately, so if I were you I'd find myself an egg cream.

If you had more time, I'd suggest the Statue of Liberty...and there's an Emma Lazarus exhibit at the nearby museum of Jewish heritage.

When feeling patriotic, I like to wave an American flag around.

Congrats!

I was there for 5, have been away for 4 and have been feeling the travelling itch now... I might be back within an year or two... emphatically not the east coast though! Too cold.

I know what would be great to mark the occasion: renew your allegiance to the Flag!
Very romantic.
Liking renewing your wedding vows.

We don't have an American flag, TPS! (We might have a Maryland one somewhere?) But I can go get an egg cream. nom.

Firas, I went running yesterday in a t-shirt and shorts. In January. Craziness.

jouke, I can't renew my allegiance, because I have never made one - not a citizen.

Also, yuck. Even though I am 99% sure you are being a smartarse.

Well now I know what to get you for your birthday.

I have found that shouting "USA! USA! USA!" while pumping one's fist in the air like a crazed Olympic hockey fan is remarkably fun. Not coincidentally, I discovered this while watching a televised US Olympic hockey game, but it's since been tested in less relevant contexts and still resulted in fun times.

I don't know! But congrats on 10 years!

YES! And you know what makes it even better? A little flag in each hand!

Things that make me feel very American:

Watching a parade
Going to a baseball game (or football game)
Eating a gardenburger or veggie hotdog (or the real thing, I gave up meat last year.)
Watching a US flag being lowered or raised.
Visiting US historic sites like the older parts of lower Manhattan or the Freedom Trail.
Visiting the courthouse and watching a jury trial.
Milkshakes, definitely.
Going to a diner.
Bruce Springsteen, cranked loud.
Back yard barbecues.
Riding in a pickup truck.

YMMV . . .

Do what you'd normally do, but have some Aaron Copeland playing as your soundtrack. Or maybe the New World Symphony.

Chanting in general is pretty darned fun, especially with a fistpump. For example:

GASPODE!
GASPODE!
GASPODE!

Yup. Fun!

My ten year anniversary was Dec 9 last year.

Congrats, gaspode!
