Television's first flipped bird? The Smothers Brothers Show had quite the gang of writers: Steve Martin ("King Tut"), Jim Stafford ("Spiders & Snakes"), Mason Williams ("Classical Gas") & Rob Reiner (Spinal Tap). In this video, Stafford riffs off of "Classical Gas" with the propesed historical moment that culminates at 3:30.
Well edited to make sure that only those who looked closely noticed the gesture (much of the audience certainly did). And a little mis-labeled, since only the last 45 seconds were "Classical Gas" (a song Mason Williams had previously debuted on the Smothers Show before it became one of the biggest instrumental hits of the 60s).

I was such a fan of the Smotherses in those days and everyone associated with the show and very tickled when Jim Stafford had his string of kinda-novelty hits in the 70s. Including the faux-gay "My Girl Bill" (I'm surprised angry homophobes didn't start burning down radio stations before they heard the last verse). "Wild Wood Weed" (built cleverly on the guitar part of the bluegrass classic "Wildwood Flower"), and its follow-up, Shel Silverstein's "I Got Stoned and I Missed It" (although he fudged some of Shel's lyrics to appeal to those who preferred to think of 'stoned' as a synonym for drunk). If ever stranded in Branson, Mo., his is the first theater I'll take shelter in.

Wow, that was really awesome. He's a funny guy and obviously good with the guitar (which is the Spanish word for guitar). I ROFLed at "Cats are like Baptists. You know they raise hell, you just can't catch 'em at it."

I then got all nostalgic clicking the related videos.

This dovetails nicely with my recent viewing of several of the old Laugh-in videos.

Comedy used to be so much funnier back then.

(And yeah, get off my lawn you rotten kids.)
