I know this world is killing you... So I have Elvis Costello's "Alison" on constant repeat...[More:]It's really the only thing that gets me through excessively difficult patches. I'm just a bit tired of being the one catching flack because I have to continually nag folks for weeks on end to get relatively simple tasks done, double check others work, etc, etc. I'm a total martyr on a cross right now but I'm swamped and am frankly tired of having to keep tabs on folks who should know better than to waste time quibbling over what patch of grass they need to pee over and claim. It's all a waste of time.

... The point of this post being that "Alison" keeps me going no matter how sorry I feel for myself. Anyone else have a song like this that works? What's your "life grinding" song?
"Vienna" by Billy Joel is pretty great too, but I usually only pull out that gun when I'm about to quit something and have to convince myself not to do it.

Grace under pressure by Elbow can usually pull me back from the ledge if I leave it on repeat. Alison is a great song, but since it is my name, and my father used to sing that song to me as a child, it doesn't have the same meaning to me.

"Alison" is one of the most beautiful, poignant songs ever.

I have two keep-going songs.

"You Gotta Be" by Des'ree

and, if I'm in a more upbeat f-you mood, this piece of camp kitsch.

Yeah, Vienna is good. Is that off The Stranger? That's such a good album... Billy Joel was still on the rise and establishing himself.

While looking around I read that Billy Joel said Vienna was one of two favorites out of songs he wrote. The other was Summer, Highland Falls. These two showcase him at his best... you can see why they called him Piano Man.

On, like, his three earliest records BIlly Joel was a really interesting artist. And then, more happened.

"One More Colour" by Jane Siberry. It's chirpy and kooky, but I have had that song in one form or another since I was 15, so it reminds me that life constantly changes and you are always evolving, and the world can be amazingly simple and intimate while being vast and fantastical at the same time.

Poppy songs by The Cure do this for me. Pictures of You. Lovesong. And the baseline on Fascination Street.

all of those help me get through rough patches.

So, I finished "Avatar: The Last Airbender" || $15,000 Gingerbread House
