So, I finished "Avatar: The Last Airbender" for the first time yesterday night.[Spoilers ahead!][More:]

I didn't get to throw down in the relatively recent MeFi thread about the sequel show, and I have to talk about it SOMEWHERE, so hopefully this is an okay place.

Final thoughts; I loved the music during Zuko and Azula's final confrontation, which along with the slightly muted sound gave the whole thing an incredibly tragic angle. Despite her role as a villain it was actually sort of sad to see her plunge into insanity.

- I enjoyed the humor of the show more often than I thought I would. I was struck by how willing the creators are to embrace lengthy, awkward pauses for laughs.

- Standout episode: "Appa's Lost Days", which I am not above admitting made me cry. Seeing a favorite character get so haggard and emotionally damaged was very difficult (but made the reunion so much better in a later episode.) Also it really made me want a dog right then.
I was introduced to this show earlier this year and just fell in love with it. The characters were very well-realized, and the core emotional bonds between them was very believable.

I just adore Toph, Iroh, and yes, Appa. I didn't really realize just how much the show had affected me until Appa, essentially a big cuddly beat of burden, went missing for several episodes and I felt his absence keenly. When we find out what happened to him in "Appa's Lost Days" I was just tied up in knots. Zuko's journey was every bit as fascinating at Aang's. The voice casting is uniformly excellent. The cataclysmic battle that was foreshadowed from almost the start of the series didn't disappoint when it finally came around.

I'm glad the show's getting the attention it deserves as it's certainly better source material than the floppy motion picture would have you believe. And I'm eagerly awaiting the new series!

Ha ha, I'm one of many that checked out the show after the movie got such horrible feedback. I guess there is good in everything?
