Lunch with M: undercover with a Michelin inspector.
My father was a warehouse supervisor for Michelin. I am disappointed this post had nothing to do with tires. Yes, I'm probably the only one. I never knew Michelin had anything to do with food. Yes, I'm probably the only one on that as well.

No, I always suspected that the Michelin inspectors all looked like that tire-guy mascot, but in a trenchcoat (to be inconspicuous).

I felt bad for M, it sounds like the joy of a good meal is sucked out of the Michelin ratings staff.

Michelin is a fascinating company. This was a good story, though I thought the profiler was unusually harsh in faulting her for just calling something "correct." In that world, there is an absolute standard, and when something has met that standard in every respect, what else are you going to say? A food reviewer and a food writer are different things. Even food writers aren't always scintillating conversationalists.

I really did admire that they check for consistency so thoroughly. THat's what can make or break a good restaurant - the hit-or-miss thing.
