The one time I answered the door wearing a thong has dissuaded further visits from JWs. I think there's a chalk mark out on the driveway, "There be dragons" or some such.
I like this a lot. It's a nice antidote to a culture which generally says you need to look both flawless and fabulous all the time, and what's more, if you have self-esteem you need to look hip, creative, and up-to-the-minute and value your clothing as a mode of self-expression. As a much more pragmatic dresser, it's nice to see a voice raised for just wearing what's comfortable, appropriate, and workable. The 'uniform' thing is a great tip. Now that I'm in a much dressier workplace, I've found that one thing I want to flat-out reject is the trend toward excessive layering. The more fashion-y people become, the more they seem to want to build multiple-layered outfits with stockings, dresses, petticoats, tops, scarves, sweaters, and jackets all at once. Enough. I've started to really insist on wardrobe for myself that consists of one-piece tops + one-piece bottoms - two major pieces - and be done with it. A jacket or sweater if it's cold or more formal, and a scarf to brighten it up. I'm not going to get more carried away than that - I'm not the person that's going to stand in front of the mirror on my free time recombining my closet contents into striking new outfits. Simple simple simple. I want to get out the door as fast as possible looking as acceptable as possible - that's it.
