Ask MeCha : I've had ... →[More:]... a response to my dating profile from someone who sounds interesting.

Now what do I do? I don't know what the next step should be. Do I say "I liked your reply, let's meet for coffee?" or do I engage in a little more exchange of emails before that? If so, what should I be asking him or telling him?

Email first! Definitely learn more. This is both of y'all's chance to show off your good stuff and charm the other without having to be socially awkward doing it.

Exchange in a little more exchange, not too much, just to make sure that he doesn't say anything too weird or crazy. Make small talk (argh) about general things, perhaps something about his profile that you liked. ("Hey, I've been to your town before, I like the park there!") But yeah, don't do that for too long, coffee is definitely your next step.

Here's a link back to rmless dating protocol.
According to me, you should have one more exchange solidifying your mutual interests and being funny and asking each other questions, and then you should go for the meetup.

I think it's ok if you write back and suggest a coffee now, but I'd put a little more in there about yourself and about what you like about him and his response so it's not all "I'm awesome and you've passed my little test so now you get your coffee reward" (even though that's kind of what it is)

Ah, excellent. I just responded to him. He lives not far from where I work, so I wrote a little about the area and what I like about it. He also mentioned a restaurant I like. On his profile he has a link to his MySpace page and on MySpace is a link to his own website. So he is a real person.
