American Idol Post SPOILERS If you want to talk, come inside. No spoilers on the Mecha front page, please.
OMG I have no idea what's going on because I have never seen the show.

Heh, I realized that the main reason I made the post- to project our essexjan from seeing results before she sees the show in the UK- is moot since she's in the US. lulz.

I watched last night in Ohio, and voted for Adam. I am so pathetic that I actually took a photo of my cellphone showing the number. But for a Brit who's never been able to vote, well, I had to take my chance.

Jason and I had a hot date tonight at the laundromat, so I got the chance to see most of the results show on the TV there (Jason, sensibly, has no TV).

I knew, from talking to an 11-year-old girl in Ohio yesterday, that Kris would win because she told me that "everyone" in her school was voting for Kris, except the weird kids. And as the largest voter demograph is teenage girls, the result was no surprise.

The winner's song sucks and blows. Worst winner's song ever.

Er, this is Jan, by the way. Jason is going to kill me now that his profile is forever linked to a post saying that 'he' voted for Adam Lambert.

The winner's song always sucks! Sucks sucks suuuuucks. Even Simon basically said last night that is sucks.

This is actually Jason:

Nah, I don't give a shit.

Yes, it's true

This IS special-k. My secret? I'm scared of the dark. I'm a big ole WUSSY PANTS.

It's true, that's why I'm "special"

Kris seems like a good guy and I don't begrudge him his win, but Adam is a superior singer (and a superior showman in general). He's got massive star quality and I hope he is able to capitalize on it because he deserves great success.

I am loving this guy's reaction (warning: foul language).

This is obviously something I'd need to watch American Idol to know about AND YET I NEVER HAVE AND STILL KNOW ENOUGH TO KNOW ADAM SHOULD HAVE WON.

Now, can we go on to talk about some other show like, I dunno, Dollhouse or something? Mmmm, Tamoh Penikett.

Here are the names we have for Kris at work: Cruise-ship Kris, Disney Kris, and Miley Kris-is. We watched on DVR and started dialing in to vote for Adam 2 hours after the show ended. We couldn't get through on any of the three numbers, and after an hour gave up. My co-worker voted for Kris several times, no problems. We thought Adam had it.

I think Adam had two major things working against him:

(1) He came into the finals as the number one guy. Those people who voted for #3 to make it to the final only to see their favorite lose? Most of them voted for Kris.

(2) He's gay. And I guarantee you there are a lot of evangelicals who vote. Clean cut small town Southern boy versus a polished gay dude, that's going to be a strike. Not to mention the teenage girl "I'd like to snuggle with him OMG" crush factor.

Arkansas cast over 38 million votes for Kris. There's only something like 4 million people in the whole state.

Yeah, but I was pretty sure Kris was gonna pull it off. Adam will always have a special place in my heart and I'll probably end up buying his first album and completely embarrassing MuddDude at the record store. I liked this quote from NPR's coverage this morning:

Another backlash of sorts came from the contestants themselves. The American Idol machine did its best to pit the folksy country Christian against the showy, sophisticated dandy. But the two men formed a friendship that transcended typical reality show expectations.

"I think we need as many indicators to young men in America that someone like Adam is the kind of guy who can be their best friend as we do to little eight year olds watching Adam Lambert as the kind of performer they could grow up into being themselves," says Shana Naomi Krochmal, contributing editor for Out Magazine.

Gah! Apparantly blockquotes aren't blacked out on the 'recent comments' page, but I don't think the blockquote gives anything away.

Oh man, that was great. I didn't watch this show or know anything about the people involved, but whatever fuckery went down was worth it just for that.

Kris would probably have picked up the majority of the Gokey voters - Gokey is a church music director. His voters aren't going to opt for the flamboyant queen over the cute Christian all-American boy.

Adam is probably better off not winning, because the winner is tied to all sorts of contractual stuff for a number of years. I know Adam will have to do the tour, but after that, I think he's pretty much his own man.

Other Idol-related news : Blake, the atrocious beat-boxer from a couple of years ago has been dropped by his record company - yay! And my all-time favourite contestant, Elliott Yamin, has a new album out, which I will make sure I buy before I get on the plane home.

ej, you know his Mom, Claudette, passed away last year, I'm sure. It was really a sad day here. His album seems to be getting good reviews!

He was robbed, I tells ya, robbed. Adam was the only reason I tuned in. (Jon is very disappointed in me. As if Survivor wasn't bad enough.)

What mct said, pretty much (one of our local papers did a Kris cover--the last time they did one of those, I'm told, was right after 9/11), with the addition that most of my Idol-savvy coworkers saw this ending coming a mile away.
