Well there's this one by Billy Bragg. It's pretty darned flattering too. There's also this Joni Mitchell song, which, you know, seems to mention me at least.
When I met Michael Hutchance, he was so thrilled with my name I half expected INXS or MAXQ would come out with a song referencing my name. He was so interested he asked me all sorts of irritating questions, beginning with "Is that your REAL name?". He made such a fuss, I was half expecting him to name his first born after me. I even imagined him insisting to Paula how splendid my name is.
Still, as far as I know, no one has referenced me by name in song.
I have however heard of the Roisin (my own offsping) Dubh.
Roro was born in 1994, 13 months before I got online and well before Wikipedia or youtube.
jonathanstrange: a short while ago, i reacquired that Eurythmics album. I first had it on vinyl, when it was a very expensive hard-to-find import. I was so excited, entirely because that was the song I wanted!
I know there are songs with my name (both my name and the nickname most people call me), but I'm not familiar with any of them. It's not a melodious name, so, frankly, I'm surprised that people try to sing it.
It's weird hearing my name being sung - mostly because my Belinda isn't terribly common in terms of characters or what not. Most Belinda's in books etc I've found have been very pretty, but very dumb, and quite bitchy! Although - there is also a moon on Uranus called Belinda - so there is that!
It looks like there are three songs titled Deborah. They're by Dave Edmunds, Vangelis and Marlene Kuntz (Italian band?!). And then there's Beck's Debra.
"Amy" by Elton John is my favorite song that includes my name. Great lyrics.
Then there's "Amie" by Pure Prarie League. That's not how I spell my name, but friends seem to reference it more often as "my" song since not as many people have heard Elton John's "Amy."
essexjan: Nope, not a single song with my name in it.
If your name is Jan, then there's Bruce Springsteen's "Tweeter and the Monkey Man" with this verse:
Tweeter and the Monkey Man were hard up for cash,
They stayed up all night selling cocaine and hash,
To an Undercover Cop who had a sister named Jan.
For reasons unexplained she loved the Monkey Man.
Lori and Tommy were lovers
He wanted to give her everything
Flowers, presents, but most of all, a wedding ring
He saw a sign for a stock car race
A thousand dollar prize it read
He couldn't get Lori on the phone
So to her mother, Tommy said
Tell Lori I love her
Tell Lori I need her
Tell Lori I may be late
I've something to do, that cannot wait
He drove his car to the racing grounds
He was the youngest driver there
The crowd roared as they started the race
Around the track they drove at a deadly pace
No one knows what happened that day
Or how his car overturned in flames
But as they pulled him from the twisted wreck
With his dying breath, they heard him say
Tell Lori I love her
Tell Lori I need her
Tell Lori not to cry
My love for her will never die
Now in the chapel where Lori prays
For her poor Tommy, who passed away
It was just for Lori he lived and died
Alone in the chapel she can hear him cry
