22 January 2009

Three point Thursday [More:]
1) I spent a long time yesterday reading some of the old "Notable Threads" as listed on the mecha wiki. There's been a lot of changes in who posts here, hasn't there? And there were a lot of intrasite crushes going on in 2005. Also, that Asheville meetup a couple of years ago looks like it was a blast.

2) My appearance in the newspaper (see here) keeps coming back to me. More people still read the newspaper than I realized.

3) I unintentionally trespassed on my roommate's personal space yesterday evening, and it embarrassed me enough that I teared up. (Her personal space is way way way larger than mine is.)
1)Through entirely legal means I am watching It Came From Hollywood!. I'm so happy I could piss blueberries.

2) We're out of white sugar so I used brown sugar in my coffee, which tastes fine, but I have to bang the box against the counter a few times before it's in small enough chunks.

3)Personal Space Invaders was the earliest entry in Ataris Fruedian Fun line of games, which was abandonded early on.

1) Making calls about arranging a small wedding reception for us and TheDonF's side of the family. Gosh, things get expensive fast!

2) Bored of leftover soup, but that's what's for dinner. Again.

3) My new prescription pills are Hulk-green and I'm hoping they will impart some superhero abilities.

1. It's felt like a loooooong couple days, with a lot of work and new therapy clients (which is draining, because I have to get up to speed so quickly) and the rainy gloom's not helping.

2. I have to have dinner tonight with my stupid marketing bosses, who are out of their minds in thinking that a "company dinner party! Yay!" will be at all "yay" after 2/3 of their work force quit. What the hell? So we all have to go and pretend to be friendly. I'm tired and cranky already, and I can't imagine this will help.

3. I got the internship at the community counseling center that I applied for. Yay! Orientation today.

1) Long week at work with people screaming it's the END OF THE WORLD...owaitnevermindifoundit. Headache inducing

2) Long week/month/year ahead as lenders I've made arrangements with have suddenly revoked them so I'm re-renegotiating debt payoff, delaying the...

3) ...divorce, which is sinking in as Really Really Happening to the Ex, which has brought some relief but is also headache and heartache inducing in it's own way.

1. I am still on pins and needles about my application to become a real librarian. My last recommender has been nothing but SILENT since last month even though I've called and left voicemails and sent emails and everything. I would go down there in person on the ONE DAY SHE TEACHES CLASS but of course, I get fucked and wind up having my ONE CLASS on the same day. Awesome. Backup recommender A told me to go fuck myself (not in as many words) when I asked him way back when and Backup#2 is out of town until Friday but said that he would be happy to do one. The deadline is February 1 and I AM LOSING MY SHIT.

2. I was finally able to register for my very last "advanced special student" (aka we'll take your money but you don't get anything out of it really, you lazy asshole) class today. It starts on Monday. At 530. When I leave work at 5. Oh, this is going to be good. As in, say goodbye to any hope I had of looking presentable or eating dinner, or taking a nap. Or anything other than OSHIT for the next 16 weeks or whatever. Fantastic.

3. I am so ready for it to be either May or August. May = week at Virginia Beach doing nothing but drinking fruity cocktails and reading trashy romance novels. August = MOVING THE FUCK OUT (provided #1 comes through and I get a place at this highly desirable location, which I won't know until #1 goes one way or the other.)

Here in the US, I found out that sometimes, venues/caterers are cheaper if you "forget to mention" that it's for a wedding. Say its a family reunion or a family get-together.

1. Waiting for the Fed-ex truck to deliver a job offer (Yay, I hope)

2. Still trying to find a car for my son who has to borrow mine to get to class.

3. Trying to fold laundry but the cats keep sleeping on it.

1. Spent all morning dealing with the local cable company. Reducing my cable, upping my internet speed! Unfortunately the customer service is unwieldly and idiotic. So, so frustrating. But faster speeds soooooon.

2. My good friend is looking for a cheap flat in Londontown, zone 1/2 if anyone knows of anything.

3. Recovering from work from last week, so haven't started work this week. The deadlines are piling up so badly that I just want to shut the door and make it all go away. I know, that doesn't work. Hopefully, a good day of tackling will take care of some of it.

1. I did that thing where I woke up way too early, but thought "Well at least it's Friday." Today is Thursday.

2. Yay octothorpe job offer!!!

3. Yeah, mostly, it's just not Friday.

1. Happy I got my DTV converter.

2. Sad that my apartment's living room has three remotes and a wiimote now.

3. Should I buy a Universal Remote?

1. I bought a flute for $10, but my flute-playing aunt said that it's a piece of crap and would cost more to fix it than to just buy a nice new flute. Oh well, I tried.

2. I had my wisdom tooth pulled on Tuesday. Tried going in to work afterward, but I felt woozy and went home early. My co-workers chastised me for trying to come in, but even after 2 years at this great new job I still have fears from my old job, where you had to be bleeding to death before they'd say it was ok for you to stay home sick.

3. I'm very, very frustrated in trying to play the piano. I'm used to single-meoldy instruments...I can play either hand by themselves just fine, but as soon as they're together I'm hopeless. Practicing has become nothing but memorizing the correct distance between fingers, and I don't like that.

1. Real worried about the work thing, budget cutting and job forecast.

2. Frustrated that the program I'm in the midst of isn't going that well.

3. At least it's Thursday. it's not Friday, but it's a start.

1. Woke up with sniffles and a sore throat. Again. This is getting tiresome: I never quite get sick enough to just collapse but I never quite get all the way better either.

2. Work sucks but I seem to be getting things accomplished. Let's hope that keeps up. One of the upsides to working for a really small, really shoestring operation is that we've been so close to the line financially for so many years that we're weirdly kind of recession proof. Or at least used to it.

3. My whole house is really clean. This is novel and I'm kind of enjoying it.

1. I have absolutely nothing to do at work, and haven't had anything to do for a few days now. I've read the whole Internet from front to back and don't really know what to do with myself.

2. My water heater is leaking, which means it's about to die. Had a weird run-in with my landlord over this. She "really really hope[s] that we don't need a new hot water heater right now." Uh, I really, really wish it weren't true too, but it is, and I'm not sure what she wants me to do about it.

3. Because of the huge vet bills I racked up this month, I've been waiting until after payday to deal with my overdue water bill (which is in my landlord's name). I'm worried that if the water heater goes out before the 1st and we have to get a permit for a new one, they'll mention the late bill to her. That'll just be one more thing for her to be mad at me about. But I also think that permit/utilities are two totally different departments, so maybe bells and sirens won't go off when/if someone requests a permit? I hope. I am having anxiety over this. Blech.

I also think that permit/utilities are two totally different departments

That's how it is here, I think the permits might even be under the aegis of the fire department, or at least that's who comes to inspect it. But ours is a big boiler -- these things may differ in different states/municipalities; that said, I don't think you have anything to worry about. Water payment is between you and the city, even if the bill's in the landlord's name. It's like electricity: it takes a long time to get cut off, (I know this from experience). They do it this way so people can absorb periodic economic shocks, the vicissitudes of life flesh is heir to, that sort of thing.

Kinda shitty of your landlord to imply that you might not get the hot water heater you need if this one craps out, though.

1. Today begins my professionally-managed monitored cardiac rehab that includes keeping records of food portion measures and clipping nutrition labels. The grad student gets to figure up total calories, sodium and other things.

2. Seeing the lawyer to update the will and power of attorney.

3. Still waiting for the paperwork to donate my body for some med student to carve up. Includes free cremation!!!

1. Woke up with a sorta sinus migraine-y feeling -- bleh. (It's rainy here, which tends to give me that feeling.)

2. Drinking coffee and trying to figure out which suit will fit me right now (I'm at my "heavier" weight in my weight range). I have to go to court later for work. (I don't usually have to wear suits.)

3. I have a ton of work for work, and it keeps getting pushed off. But a bunch of it is due on Monday, sigh.

4. I applied for a fancy job associated with a new ... erm ... a certain new chief executive. I think I have a shot (I know the people who are doing the selection and have worked with them previously) but then again lots of people have a shot. So I wait.

1. The procrastination is strong today.

2. Ate iconomy's black bean soup (with some additions - avocado, can tomatoes, chipotle pepper) for dinner last night and lunch today. It's become a staple in our meal plans.

3. Have dry skin despite my obsessive water-drinking and hand cream-applying.

1. Everyone in my household woke up 'intestinally challenged' this morning, there is definitely a bug going around.

2. The snow is FINALLY melting, which may not seem like a big deal to most of you, but here in Central NC, snow on the ground for NIGH UPON THREE FUCKING DAYS is astounding.

3. I have spent an inordinate amount of time today wishing that my husband liked cannellini beans as much as I do.

Bonus:
My husband, a RABID Steelers fan, has been sharing all sorts of fun Steelers trivia/marginalia today, and I find it all to be rather entertaining.

Pitfall was my JAM back in the day, Hugh. My ability to traverse the crocs with ease had my whole family jealous.

1. I've got a new niece! Yay!
2. I have to go see her in the hospital. BOO! As you all my recall, I really, really hate the whole pregnancy and childbirth thing. I have some kind of PTSD around the issue. I hate the maternity ward. I hate having to pretend that all newborns don't look exactly alike--like squishy aliens that steal your sleep and make your nipples bleed! And I really, really am dreading the birth story. Oh the neverending, interminable TMI birth story. And then they'll want me to hold it, but I don't like touching really, really breakable things that just came out of someone's crotch!
3. I realize all this makes me a horrible person. I do. I promise I'll make it up to my niece when she's older, cuter and has a little head control. Aunt Rossi gives the best presents, throws the best Easter Egg hunt and is prone to offering weird dares with high payoffs (ie, I'll give you 20 bucks to eat that). I just get creeped out by the teeny newness.

1. Jetlag is manageable, missing boo is unmanageable.

2. I was on a course in central London today and took the opportunity to visit my favourite bookshop on Charing Cross Road. It's closing down at the end of the month. I know I can get any book I want over the internet, but there's nothing to beat browsing round a favourite bookshop on a rainy afternoon.

3. Steak is ready, and American Idol is about to start. Yay!

1. I FINALLY have a job! And it's one that I actually wanted! I'll be working where Rocky ran up the steps! I love museum work!

2. I went out last night by myself to celebrate the job having. I got tacos and a margarita, and the waiter comped my drink! Free booze! I didn't even tell him why I was out, and I'm pretty sure I saw a wedding ring, so I don't think he was hitting on me. Maybe it was pity because I was alone?

3. Going out to dinner with three Philly MeFites tonight. Hooray!

@octothorpe: I hope the person who delivers your job offer is attractive in preferred gender!

@jrossijr: Um, didn't you have a kid recently? Or am I confusing you with ramix?

1. I have gone for 12 days without either having a cigarette or being an asshole to someone. I've decided to celebrate by going here after my 1st month is up, and then will go to some other fabulous place or squirrel away that $100 I will have saved by not buying a pack every 3 days.

2. Did I mention I've been doing this cold turkey, I do have the money in my account or in my wallet to buy cigarettes, and I've had two stressful days this week, even with a therapy session? I suppose the Patch could help, but then again, I've only been a smoker for about seven years...

3. Also need to plan for housewarming party at the end of February! The Unboxening *must* continue this weekend!

WOO! Stupid marketing bosses, realizing that I had nothing to do and they had no work to give me, let me out early and I don't have to go back for the last week of my two weeks' notice period. And they made the same offer to the other person who quit. So tonight's awkward dinner has been converted into a "Farewell Dinner," which is much less awkward. And I don't have to spend all next week pretending that I'm not surfing the internet.

1. Through the grace of the god of clutter, I have been able to scrounge enough in lost dollar bills and random cans of food from the detritus of my recent move to be able to eat (for the past three weeks). It's sort of like a game. And tomorrow is payday...

2. ...although I'm several hundred dollars overdrawn due to moving costs and bills, so it won't be much of one.

3. Received an invitation to interview for a position that could be a nice change of pace, though there are several other things I don't like about it (possible pay decrease, for one). We'll see, though- I've been ready and trying pretty hard to move on for a year now.

3. Somebody hit my mailbox on the Snow Day, but it's built like a brick you-know-what house, so all it did was knock the wooden crosspiece half out which is making the house numbers dangle a little. The postman can still use it. I bet their car looks AWESOME only not.
