OMG Palin just dissed the 3rd floor of my building! [More:] Yeah, so the 3rd floor has all the fruit fly labs. And they do some pretty amazing research that ends up in Nature and Science every few months. Thankfully it looks like she wont get elected!
Oh my gosh, this article is too much! What are the odds that autism and fruit flies could be related?

Thing is, if she even read anything related to what her speech denounces, she'd have seen the connections. God, PLEASE let voter turn-out to be as big as it needs to be.

Does no one remember the episode of West Wing were Sam gets schooled by the intern? He's trying to get rid of "stupid" government reports to save money, and it turns out she's read them all and is able to explain why they're important and it turns out they're kind of all important and it's not that simple? I feel like that intern whenever I hear a politician rag on some "earmark". Life costs money!

*ahem*
Fruit flies.

But fuck the fruit flies, right? Fuck the whales.

i so have to pass out now before i say something grounded in fact, effort, and science.
i'm sure i'm just chock full o' demons that hide money for bridges and things doncha know.

Actually life is cheap.

What's expensive is all the nice things we want in life.

Stuff like research.

Palin is like Ronald Reagan, Brian Mulroney and George W. Bush for me in that she is one of the few people or animals I can muster absolutely no empathy for.

But she did go to high school, right? Maybe even graduated?
My god, my head hurts.
Pray for me.

When I was young, my saxophone teacher was doing research on fruit flies for her Master's Degree. I remember stopping by her lab, and she showed me how she'd knock em out with some CO2 and sort them. The name on the lab door was "Dr. O. Sophila." Ahhhh to be young and geeky again. Now I'm just geeky...

Palin jawing about her support for autism research and then trashing the work scientists do with fruit flies is like announcing how you're going to promote the fundamentals of math, then in the next breath sneering that pi should be rounded down to 3, since it's just so stupid to have all those random numbers after the decimal point going on forever.

Or, as was put so brilliantly by biologist P.Z. Myers:

This idiot woman, this blind, shortsighted ignoramus, this pretentious clod, mocks basic research and the international research community. You damn well better believe that there is research going on in animal models — what does she expect, that scientists should mutagenize human mothers and chop up baby brains for this work? — and countries like France and Germany and England and Canada and China and India and others are all respected participants in these efforts.

Yes, scientists work on fruit flies. Some of the most powerful tools in genetics and molecular biology are available in fruit flies, and these are animals that are particularly amenable to experimentation. Molecular genetics has revealed that humans share key molecules, the basic developmental toolkit, with all other animals, thanks to our shared evolutionary heritage (something else the wackaloon from Wasilla denies), and that we can use these other organisms to probe the fundamental mechanisms that underlie core processes in the formation of the nervous system — precisely the phenomena Palin claims are so important.

This is where the Republican party has ended up: supporting an ignorant buffoon who believes in the End Times and speaking in tongues while deriding some of the best and most successful strategies for scientific research. In this next election, we've got to choose between the 21st century rationalism and Dark Age inanity. It ought to be an easy choice.

I don't suppose we could gas the far right, could we?

Oh, and while I was in college, an animal rights activist broke into her lab and released the fruit flies. So moronism isn't unique to conservatives...

Laughing at this undoes all the fear that lady brings into my world.

You know who else dissed fruit fly research? That's right, Trofim Lysenko.

Put them on sealed trains and ship them into the remote interior.
Whoops, that won't work, they're already there.

I love her the most when she wears her polar bear pin:

Hopefully, Obama supporters will be able look back in two weeks and see that she was the greatest gift to the his campaign that they could have gotten.

And wasn't her father a science teacher? o_O

They should study the fruit flies hovering around their rotting campaign.
Snap!

It's just so much evolution hokum. Theories don't help mothers with children with disabilities, it's gotta be all about job creation.

Because who doesn't want a good job?
Yes, i took 30 minutes to remove all the NSFW links.
Because Fuck!
The fruit flies!

Yeah, i know i've been getting swearier and swearier, but i'm trying to secure my place in hell, real estate being what it is. Up here ignorance is no excuse, up there it's a platform, down there it's the big punchline.
Good to know God is just a stairway away.

blatant willful ignorance is the new pandering to the base, apparently.
posted by kellydamnit 27 October | 11:59
she thinks "fruit" flies are gay flies, that's why she hates them
posted by matteo 27 October | 12:55
Doing it on the fly makes you a top or a bottom?
Because both those flies up there are dudes.
Rogue flies, just doing it.
Later they'll be winging it.
