THIS IS A SHOUTING THREAD ABOUT IKE! [More:]OKAY! SO HERE'S THE DEAL! MOST NATIONAL MEDIA IS TRYING TO MAKE IT SEEM LIKE WHAT GALVESTON IS GOING TO HAVE TO ENDURE WILL ALSO BE WHAT HOUSTON HAS TO ENDURE. THAT'S NOT TRUE AT ALL! NATIONAL MEDIA IS SCREAMING THAT PEOPLE WHO STAY IN ... SOME PLACE WE'RE NOT SURE WHERE BECAUSE TO STATE FOR CERTAIN WOULD MEAN ADMITTING THE MEDIA IS FULL OF BULLSHIT ... WILL FACE "CERTAIN DEATH" WHICH IS A QUOTE TAKEN ENTIRELY OUT OF CONTEXT.

IN ACTUALITY, THE SIZE OF THE STORM IS BAD, BUT THE SEVERITY OF THE STORM IS PROBABLY GOING TO BE HIGH CAT 2 OR LOW CAT 3, NOTHING NEAR THE STRENGTH OF CARLA, ALICIA, OR RITA! YES, WIND, YES RAIN, PROBABLY YES SOME BAD FLOODING, AND MOST DEFINITELY NO POWER FOR AWHILE. BUT 1.5 MILLION PEOPLE ARE NOT--REPEAT NOT--GOING TO DIE!!!!

PLEASE PRAY/SEND GOOD THOUGHTS/MEDITATE UPON/YOUR PREFERRED METHOD HERE FOR AND ABOUT THE PEOPLE OF GALVESTON AND PORT ARTHUR TEXAS. THOSE OF US IN HOUSTON ARE HUNKERING DOWN AND WILL BE FAR BETTER OFF THAN THOSE FOLK! OKAY! ALSO? I'LL TWITTER FROM MY PUTER TILL THE POWER GOES OUT AND THEN I'LL USE MY PHONE. THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO'S EXPRESSED THEIR CONCERN, OKAY I LOVE YOU BYE BYE.
BUT 1.5 MILLION PEOPLE ARE NOT--REPEAT NOT--GOING TO DIE!!!!

I AM VERY GLAD TO HEAR THIS NEWS. I WAS TALKING TO MY TRAVEL AGENT TODAY AND SHE IS IN TEXAS AND I DO NOT WANT HER TO DIE, BECAUSE SHE IS NICE.

Do you have an emergency generator, WolfDaddy? My parents (and also my sister and her family) in central Louisiana have one, and it's been invaluable. They only got electricity back a few days ago from Gustav, and they were out for ages with Rita.

(My dad emailed me that the crew that worked on the power lines in their area this time were from Philadelphia. Brotherly love!)

Anyway, you and Texas have my thoughts and prayers, and I'll be checking your Twitter.

Of course, now that I think about it, neither my parents or my sister live in town, so they are further down the list for attention; it can't be so long for Houston's electrical outages to be addressed.

taz, I don't have a generator. I'd be scared of the contraption! Hopefully any power outages we may experience will be restored relatively quickly (I was out of power for a week during Rita, though it had nothing to do with the storm). This time I've got friends that are coming over and we're making a party of the ordeal.

Still very worried about the impact this storm will have on Galveston, and on up into the Clear Lake area.

Yeah, Texas is all atwitter like this is our first hurricane. I guess, in one sense, it IS the first big one since Rita/Katrina. Galveston is going to be bad but I can't see why folks here in San Antonio were making a run at the store shelves.

I hope that Galveston and Houston say safe.

The NWS shouts, too.

MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS REMAIN NEAR 105 MPH...165 KM/HR...WITH
HIGHER GUSTS. IKE IS A CATEGORY TWO HURRICANE ON THE
SAFFIR-SIMPSON SCALE BUT COULD REACH THE COAST AS A CATEGORY
THREE...MAJOR HURRICANE. STRONGER WINDS...ESPECIALLY IN
GUSTS...ARE LIKELY ON HIGH RISE BUILDINGS.

Or maybe their telex system is stuck in upper case. ;-)

They always shout, buddy :-)

My shouting: My folks are supposed to fly back to Dallas tomorrow, but Dallas is supposed to be having 50mph winds. We're spending the morning trying to figure out another way to get them home. Looks like they're going to drive. It's very complicated!

ABOUT A WEEK AGO, LATE ONE NIGHT, C-SPAN WAS SHOWING HISTORICAL FOOTAGE OF OLD POLITICAL CONVENTIONS. I WAS TRANSFIXED BY EISENHOWER'S SPEECH AT THE 1956 REPUBLICAN CONVENTION. I DON'T THINK I HAD EVER SEEN FOOTAGE OF ANY OF HIS SPEECHES BEFORE, AND I HADN'T REALIZED WHAT A COMPELLING SPEAKER HE WAS.

What's that? Wrong Ike? Never mind.
