Nuke-u-lar [More:]
Five minutes in, Palin says 'nuke-u-lar'.

And:

GIBSON: What insight into Russian actions particularly in the last couple weeks does the proximity of the state give you?

PALIN: They’re our next door neighbors. And you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska.

Note to Palin: 'insight' does not mean 'can you see in?'
She's sounding dummer and dummer.

arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh

still like her specs, tho.

Scarily, BtGoG, there are people who will probably vote for her just because they like her specs.

Does anyone else find it really annoying that she keeps calling him Charlie?
posted by chillmost 12 September | 06:26
I do. It's a bit "how to win friends and influence people" to constantly use their names when answering questions - I find alpha-males in business tend to punctuate their statements with names like that and it makes me squirm. I guess she's and alpha-female.

I can't remember where the quote comes from, but it was perfect: "Look, I can see the moon from here. That doesn't make me an astronaut."

Can you actually see Russia from Alaska? My understanding, which may date to the fourth grade, was that the Bering Strait was, like, fifty miles wide or something.

*snort* Nice one, ej.

I don't like her "didn't blink" answer. Sounds a bit gung-ho, head first, two dudes duelling at dawn if you know what I mean.

male* reply:
"No, I knew I was ready for the job, and so did McCain. I was honored to be asked."

female* reply:
"No, I felt that I was ready for the job, and I was so pleased and honored to be asked."

cowboy reply:
"Knowing that.... you can't blink, you have to be wired in a way and being so committed.. I didn't blink. You can't blink. They smell fear yaknow."

* based on the observation that females, even in politics, answer with words conveying emotion not knowledge.

I LOVE that, and I am so using that.

Now, which state is most likely to secede from the union?

omg, No, she di'nt.

Understanding insight as in sight??!! yikes. Lacking basic English comprehension skills?! No way! This is appalling.

Her relation?

Ugh I watched that last night. Charlie Charlie Charlie. It's like one of her coaches told her to address him by name and that is the only thing she remembered and latched onto in the interview.
I think the most unwatchable part was him asking her about the Bush Doctrine and her obviously not knowing what it was at all and squirming to come up with any answer whatsoever.

I admit that I did not know what the Bush Doctrine was. On the other hand, I'm not running for VP, so there you go.
posted by muddgirl 12 September | 10:49
SHE FUCKING WINKED AT HIM WHILE SHE WAS TALKING!

This is the first time I've seen a snippet of the video from her interview and it's cringe-worthy. She's shifting in her seat, twitching, it's like she's unprepared for a job interview!

I think I'm going to be ill.

I don't care how anyone pronounces nuclear, or any other commonly confusing word.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 12 September | 11:24
I don't understand how nuclear is a confusing word. Nu-clear. Like a brand of eyedrops, or maybe the downmarket version of Windex.

(yeah, I know it has threee syllables, but I'll settle for getting phonemes in the right order)

How about that response about Israel? It was like "yeah, whatever they wanna do, whoever they wanna bomb, I'll support it." Boy, she's really dug deep on this foreign affairs stuff. You can tell she hasn't thought more than 5 minutes about Iran, Iraq, Israel, Russia, etc. This is what the Bush legacy is getting us.

Thing is, I don't see the people that are supporting her/McCain having much of a problem with anything in the interview.
posted by Hellbient 12 September | 11:55
At this point I think expectations of her actual ability are so low that all she needed to do was not look like a complete idiot. All I'm seeing today is "yeah, she did pretty well against BIG BAD MEAN LIBRUL MEDIA."

Does anyone trust Sarah Palin with the Nuclear Button?

I can totally see this scenario happening: McCain/Palin win. McCain drops dead. President Palin blunders into a Nuclear War. THIS SHIT IS SCARY.

The astronaut line is from commenter Krista at Balloon Juice.
I can find no other information about her.

Apparently Obama was asked about it last year and got it wrong as well.

Me too - I thought the Bush Doctrine was just to be a moron and fuck up as much as possible.
posted by Hellbient 12 September | 16:04
bunnyfire, are you referring to this?

"SIEGEL: Senator Obama, the short version of the Obama Doctrine.

SEN. OBAMA: Well, I think one of the things about the Obama Doctrine is it’s not going to be as doctrinaire as the Bush Doctrine because the world is complicated. And I think part of the problem we’ve had is that ideology has overridden facts and reality.

But I think that the basic concept — and I’ve heard it from some of the other folks — is that, increasingly, we have to view our security in terms of a common security and a common prosperity with other peoples and other countries. And that means that if there are children in the Middle East who cannot read, that is a potential long-term danger to us. If China is polluting, then eventually that is going to reach our shores. We have to — and work with them cooperatively to solve their problems as well as ours."

If you are referring to this, please note that in this exchange Obama is talking about his own doctrine, The Obama Doctrine, and how it differs from The Bush Doctrine of pre-emptive attack.

If you are not referring to this, then could you please provide us a link?

It is nice of you to conceede that Palin got the Bush Doctrine wrong.
posted by Fuzzy Monster 12 September | 16:06
The Bush Doctrine might make more sense when God speaks to you directly.
posted by box 12 September | 16:15
I think that her pronunciation of "nuclear" is intentional, and coached, and part of the whole sideshow that those people have succeeded in getting the Obama people, the media, and the whole country caught up in, at the expense of talking about the real issues that will matter for the near future of this country and the world.

Yes, if Obama showed a lack of understanding about what the Bush Doctrine was, I'd like to see a source, too.

A couple of sources I looked at noted that Gibson was a bit in error, as well - the Bush Doctrine is a doctrine of preventive war (declaring war on a state with no intention to attack you, to prevent them developing the wherewithal to attack you in future) as opposed to pre-emptive war (declaring war on a state which has indicated that it is about to attack you - the citation made in one source was to the Bay of Pigs incident), which has been the doctrine of many U.S. presidents.

Oh, and on "nukular": it does grate on me, because it's not a preferred pronunciation in most broadcast sources, but during the Bush years I did once hear a long discussion by a linguist that pretty much convinced me it was not fair to make too big a deal over it. For one thing, it's often a regionalism (Jimmy Carter says "nukular," and I wouldn't malign his intelligence, and then too, as the linguist pointed out, Americans often develop pronunciations based on words with similar construction. We have almost no other words with an "oo-klee-ar" sound, but we have a bunch (molecular, secular, vascular) that fit the other pattern. It's an easy error to make "nuclear" fit the more common speech pattern.

We're not going to see a source, Miko-- because there is no source.

Obama is a smart guy, a former president of the Harvard Law Review. He knows what the Bush Doctrine is.

bunnyfire is simply repeating yet another Bush/Cheney/Rove/McCain-style lie.
posted by Fuzzy Monster 14 September | 16:09
Yeah, I know a lot about Obama, and don't think that ever happened. I just wondered where bunnyfire had read that and wanted to see the source. I'd be surprised if there was one, too. This is about as deep as opposition accusations usually go.
