What's good in your world today? [More:] We got almost our entire security deposit back from our awful landlord. Woo! I was convinced she was going to trump up all sorts of deductions, but she didn't.

And since I had kind of mentally written off my half of that deposit, it's like free money. Double woo!
It's saturday, which is my friday. I made $20 in tips. I have a cold beer and a bag of spicy peanuts.

Um ... I put clean sheets on my previously diz-gusting bed (human, cat, dog sleeping place). I got some sleep. I've been reading (!!) books lately, which is really cool -- I sort of thought my book-reading days were over.

I managed to make 3 trips into a fitting room today while at Target without crying or getting discouraged. (And I ended up with some super cute clothes for work and my vacation.)

Lawn is MOWED. I've showered. I'm eating microwave White Castles whilst waiting for hubby to get home so's I can go to store.

(I don't buy White Castles but he does. I'll eat them, though.)

We finally saw The Dark Knight today and I have got my Batman geek on BIG TIME. I may have never mentioned my lifelong fascination with all things Batman, but it's there and boy did that movie get me torqued up over it again.

i finally got started fixing up the apartment for the imminent arrival of my family (the new grandparents to match my new-auntey-ness). it's more of a mess now, but it's much better than not having started at all.

I went out and signed up seven people to vote today.

I bought a new 6-man tent and footprint at the REI sale today. YAY, lots of room for the 2 dogs and I. We're definitely getting some mountain time this fall.

We played "getting to know you" games with my campers today and they went really well. I got to be part of the big Human Knot, which is my favorite.

[NOTE: NOT ACTUALLY GOOD, SO FEEL FREE TO SKIP.]

The slumlord who bought the house next door managed to paint my car while he was painting his carport, killed one of my rose bushes, and trampled many of my other plants, and then when I complianed had the gall to yell at me, "I'm sorry for all of the injustices that you've ever suffered in your life, lady."

So really, I should just start another thread, but I don't have the energy.

"I'm sorry for all of the injustices that you've ever suffered in your life, lady"???

Dude. No words.

I got an AWESOME Samsonite suitcase at TJ Maxx today for something like 10% of its original price! 90% off! It's a wee bit small for my purposes but if I just mail my insanely heavy winter coat to Poland, I'm golden. My old suitcase - college, Indonesia, Latvia, and points in between - was beginning to break down into its respective components...and there was no chance on this earth it would have fit in a Polish train compartment. And it's not black, so I'll be able to spot it easily.

I could buy luggage all day. I freaking LOVE luggage. LOVE IT.

Yay crazy discounts! Yay huge trade deficit with China!

I am very very stressed so nothing good in my world either. I went to the farmer's market this morning hoping to read and distract myself. But I just sat there and watched all the happy people and the little kids having a carefree Saturday. Then I ate some lunch, went home and took a nap. Then I decided I still need to keep myself distracted. So I went and watched Tropic thunder. meh. Now I am home mentally preparing to pack up my life.

I bought a beautiful rug today. The 5 x 7 size. It's for my bedroom. It's so beautiful. It makes me happy. I love all of the area rugs on Anthropologie. I want to spread them wall to wall!

It's a lazy sunday morning. I've been watching Dexter in bed, which I'm years late to the party for, but am enjoying none the less. I'm also snacking on wasabi peas - mmmm. I'm about to get up, do some cleaning and wash some laundry and meet a friend for crepes. I'll then wander into Borders and flick through books for awhile.

Pup, does he need permits from the city for any of the work he's doing? And does he have them? Just askin'...

He has them as of about a month ago. He didn't have them for the previous 6-8 months. And though I could have called the city then, I didn't. Because I'm nice, until someone fucks with stuff that actually affects me.

He also told me, after I complained about the plants, "If you were the owner instead of the tenant, maybe I'd care." So I have a call in to my landlord, who I'm hoping will call him and tell him that I'm her proxy. We're supposed to talk tomorrow.

Meantime, I'm fed up beyond fed up. GF has closed herself off in another room, wisely.

I'm really, really sorry to have ruined this thread, occhiblu, et al. Sorry.

One good thing: Fresh tomatoes for dinner. And, the little cat has been curled up on my stomach all evening, oblivious to the fact that I'm in a horrible mood. Or maybe, being the dork that she is, she thrives on it. That'd be about right.

I cut up cracker boxes and organized my pencils, pens, markers, paintbrushes &c with them in their drawer, on a break from painting a very glittery extremely Disneyesque shelf.

What's good? I took a trip to a little bar in the hipster part of Bushwick, Brooklyn today.

Had some beers. Grilled some sausages out back. Got some buybacks from a very nice bartender. Very friendly, fun crowd.

Nonetheless, I realized that that scene and neighborhood were not for me. I am not 22 years old anymore. I don't want to live in a filthy loft/dorm in a high-crime neighborhood with a frou-frou organic food shop, but no places where you can buy decent meat or vegetables. I'm fairly bourgeois. I like privacy, quiet and personal space.

Knowing thyself -- it's a good thing.

I also went roller skating this morning at the roller rink. With my kids. How could I not list that? That was better than the rug.

I had a lovely day - there was turnout at the ONTD meetup I organized, I had a lovely time at a housewarming party and was given a public transit tip that saved buckets of travel time and got me to the salad place in time for them to serve me just the salad of my dreams.

Went to the gym first thing this morning and was able to get my favorite elliptical. That always makes me happy.

Then I went to the doctor and found out the painful rash on my chin is actually SHINGLES. Pretty damn awesome.

Funny thing about Coke is that it'll actually start to dissolve paint overnight. If you were to accidentally spill paint on a flat surface on a car, it'd just sit there and eat through the paint and you'd never really know until later when it rained and the paint started to go bye byes, so be careful with that, yeah?

rhapsodie - friend of mine had shingles, ran through the full gamut of medicines and is ok now. It's contagious AS HELL, as I'm sure you've been told, but there's drugs for it. My friend drank some booze whilst on the meds and after a really interesting night of violent moodswings, the upshot is don't drink at all while you're on them. agh. bad bad.

I went out for food and drinks and had "drunken fries", which are fries cooked in a beer batter. I rarely do deep-fried stuff, and omg they were so good. This as after trying and failing to fix computer #4 - every computer plugged into my friend's place has died quickly and quietly. It's like a damned House of Euthanasia over there. I'm pretty sure the house current is fubar'ed.

For heaven's sake, people, I'm a therapist. Don't go apologizin' for expressing negative emotion around me. Feel your feelings! That is a command! :-/

Also, I forgot to say that I like Lori's rug. Lori, I like your rug!

Elizard and I ate dinner at The Bright Star, a restaurant that's been around for more than 100 years. It was yummy. Best steak around, lobster & crabmeat au gratin to die for, and fried crab claws as big as my thumb. Plus quenching sweet tea, a waitress who called us "honey", and bread pudding and chocolate almond pie to take home. OM NOM NOM. Simple food prepared with care. It's a restaurant that I've been eating at all my life -- I've celebrated birthdays there, it was where my parents would ALWAYS eat every Sunday night, etc. I haven't been there in a year or so and it was fun to take elizard and see it work its magic on her. Unfortunately, they sat us in the new part, and we didn't get to sit in the old booths under the murals painted in 1915. But man was it good. I'd eat there every night if I could. And I'd weigh 800 pounds. I'm telling y'all, there's something special about the confluence of Greek and Southern cooking, especially in a restaurant that's been in the same hands for generations.

Then when we got back, The Two Towers was on TV, so we relaxed and watched the Battle of Helm's Deep. (I was rooting for the Uruk-Hai. Oh well.)

So I am well-fed and well-entertained. Those are good things.

Plus, it's almost football season! Woo-hoo!

Zack - the doc gave me Valtrex for the shingles and I have the biggest urge to recreate Herpes commercials at every opportunity. I'm sad that I don't own a hammock or a kayak. I guess it's super contagious while blistering, but when it crusts over it's not contagious. It's a form of herpes, but caused by the same virus that causes chicken pox, which my boyfriend has never had. I'm more worried about him catching it than he is.
posted by rhapsodie 24 August | 00:00
Valtrex can be hell on the stomach, and I'd recommend increasing your calcium intake - I got muscle cramps easily when I was on it, and the calcium really helped. YMMV, of course. There's a friend of mine who works for AIDS Vancouver who knows more about STD's than most doctors - I was going to call her soon anyways, so I'll ask about simplex 3 and see if she's got any helpful hints.

I woke up singing 'Galileo' by the Indigo Girls, apropos of nothing at all, and now I'm all emotional (in a good way).

"How long till my soul gets it right..."

goo, now I am listening to the Indigo girls and reading their Wiki entry. That led me to other places, including Amazon, and now I am at this: All women are bi like me. The places you go.

Thanks, occhi. It is sooooo beautiful. ;-)

rhapsodie, I'm glad you saw the doctor early. Good vibes for good health, good weekend, and speedy recovery.

The neighbors cut down a tree that brushed against our deck, and suddenly the sun can stream into our (previously dim) living room and bathroom.

Today is the birthday of my oldest friend. We met right around this date, 32 years ago.

Friends volunteered to help score The Fella's trivia contest entries, which will go well into the wee hours. (Last year, we got only one helper; his tale of the seemingly-vile but actually-delicious Velveeta salsa dip that I brought out 'round midnight seems to have lured this year's group.)

I found a dress to wear to The Fella's brother's wedding. I think.

Daughter called today for my Bday. . .I was unsure whether she would.

I am very happy about it.

We left her on campus on Thursday, bummed around SF on Friday, going to the Kahlo exhibit, then drove home, a bit sadly.
