My favorite quote on the subject is from a SciFi series:
"You know, I used to think that it was awful that life was so unfair. Then I thought, wouldn’t it be much worse if life were fair, and all the terrible things that happen to us come because we actually deserve them? So, now I take great comfort in the general hostility and unfairness of the universe." – Marcus Cole, Babylon 5
I lived in an old wooden 70s-ish A-frame house, a big one, way out in Baltimore county near the PA line in the late 80s. I lived there with 7 other art students, my 5 year old daughter, 3 or 4 cats, 4 tanks of tropical fish and newts, a bunny briefly and anything between 5 and 13 dogs on any given day. In the fall I taught my daughter to count using the daddy long legs on the wall by the stairs and then in the winter we all about froze to death because nobody when building that house had considered things like insulation and we were trying to heat it with a couple of old scavenged wood stoves. It was sort of a fun year and then I moved to New York to become a famous abstract expressionist painter. Unfortunately, the only person in New York who was ever even slightly interested in my paintings was the guy who saw them on the street 2 years later, the day I was putting them into a U-Haul to move back to Baltimore so I could starve more cheaply.
That exercise in nostalgia was nice. But it's 2008 now and I still hate everyone.
