14 July 2008

The roofers' choice of radio stations is making me think about leaving the flat for the day. Ugh.[More:]

Bon Jovi at ten in the morning is a bit much. But when you mix it with Sade and vapid boy band crooning, it's fucking annoying. Even just plain '80s would be acceptable, but this is a horrible mish-mash of KRAP.

And it's so loud that I can't listen to my own music or watch TV. Ugh ugh ugh.
Did you just say that Bon Jovi is crap?

I am outraged. I say good day to you, madam.

All replies should scan with the following lines from Mandy:

oh Mandy
well you kissed me and stopped me from shaking
I need you today

For example: "Oh Specklet, the radio is too loud, why don't you shut the window?"

I'd be tempted to get hold of some super-powered amp and blast Radio 4 at them. Have you discovered The Archers yet?

It was Enya a minute ago, now it's the Bangles.

I looked up The Archers. 15,000 episodes? Good lord!

I walked by the construction at Lincoln Center on the way to the office this morning and heard a busted-up radio blaring Double's The Captain of Her Heart. Will I ever wring it from my head?

Aha! I know just the trick.

Might I recommend Army of Lovers? I think there's a law all contractors have to hate them.

I am of the sound medical opinion that any song with the word Captain in it automatically is bad for you.

I defy anyone up in this hizzy to prove me wrong.

Captain Ahab by the Didjits? One of the greatest riffs to come out of the midwest punk scene in the 80s.

Captain Lou by NRBQ? Not one of the greatest songs, but bad for you? I think not.

"Captain Jack" by Billy Joel (Props to Jonny Macanudo!)

"Good Morning Captain" by Slint. This song is undeniably good for you.

You are proved wrong. Good day, sir.

"Ride Captain Ride" Blues Image

Both nutritious and filling.

Double's The Captain of Her Heart...

Hugh, that's one of the all-time most fucking depressing songs from the 80s, right up there with "The Boys of Summer" and "Steppin' Out".
posted by Atom Eyes 14 July | 10:34
Yeah, that's why I supplied a good antidote via "Twilight Zone."

In case that didn't work, how about this?

Okay, so I guess some might find that depressing, too.

Test Match Special on longwave!

Steady on, matthewr - she's only been in the UK a few weeks, we don't want to scare her off. I was already quite mischievous by mentioning the Archers...

Who the hell listens to Enya while doing any sort of manual labor?

I went out for lunch today with a mate from work (got a result too - it was my turn to pay but I'd left my money at home, so he paid, yaaay!)

The music in the pub was fabulous - classic rock, and not the cheesy stuff either but things like Street Fighting Man and Roadhouse Blues (The Doors version, not Quo). The only bleagh moment came with a Supertramp track. It made lunch even more enjoyable having good background music.

Yo Jan, check this out. It's my favorite band ever doing "Roadhouse Blues."

I always hoped Enya would make a comeback record of abrasive nu-metal and call it "Enya Face".

I'll show myself out.

Oh geez, I had something like this when they knocked down the house next door.

Construction noise? Fine.

A truck pulling up, the cabin about the height of my window, with the radio blaring "Tie a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree" at astonishing volume from a semi tuned AM radio? NOT FINE.

This morning I was awoken by Bryan Adams' "Run To You" followed by "Evil Woman" (unfortunately the ELO version, not Black Sabbath), then one of those "R&B" tunes featuring a girl with an affected vocal style and LITERALLY three chords.

Also, Enya Face made me laugh.

I'm playing Twilight Zone for about the bajillionth time in 24 hours. Thanks, Hugh!

Pretty awesome, eh?

The lyrics make little sense, but the song kicks butt.

Here's Golden Earring's other great single, Radar Love. Sure, you know it, but now's a great time to listen to it again.

"Evil Woman" (unfortunately the ELO version

"Unfortunate" and "ELO" in the same sentence? Does not compute.

ELO is insanely awesome. Seriously, if Jeff Lynne's genius for harmonies was good enough for George Harrison, it's good enough for me!

Assuming Lipstick Thespian meant "'captain' anywhere in the lyrics," and not necessarily "'captain' in the title," I submit Gordon Lightfoot's "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" as a counterexample. If we really needed any more counterexamples than have already been provided in this thread.
