Polyorama is back. <3 interrobang, taz, and iconomy.[More:]

It's been broken for a while: hackers fucked with my hosting account (bad them) and I was too demoralized to rebuild the site (bad me), and I've felt kinda terrible about that. But now? Rebuilt. Huzzah!

I first announced it about a year and a half ago, when it was just one set from interro, and taz and iconomy jumped on board with a couple of great sets each; John has done two more excellent sets as well, the latest of which (Fourmiorama) came along after the site got effed up, so it's basically brand new content even if it's been around for a bit now in its raw form.

There was some enthusiasm from various folks about doing their own sets; I'd love to see that come back and have more to add to the site (and I'm trying to get revved up to do a set of my own), so if anyone is interested now I am all ears.

Big thanks, again, to iconomy and taz and interrobang for doing such an awesome job on the sets they created, and for having patience with me during the site-brokenness funk.
woo! That's great!

I had another one I was half-working on... I wonder if I can dredge it up and figure out what I was on about. Anybody interested should try it - it's wonderful puzzly fun trying to get your panels to all slip and slide successfully.

Thank you! This is the first time I've been able to see whether or not the Fourmiorama works! Thanks!

that's amazing. Loved Taz's one but the Circuit one hurt my eyes. Fells like I've had a post-prandial tipple too many!

I'd love to see more sets too...they're so fun to play with, and soooo fun to make. interrobang's newest is just gorgeous.

ps zomg what what did you do to metafilter?

Oh fun! Reminds me of the mix-n-match books of childhood, surrealist games, etc. My cuppa tea.

Hmmm in some of them the panels are displaying too large I think? The circuit one ( I don't recall it being blurry like that) and my longboat one is. I haven't seen all of them.

Sweeet!!

iconomy, I sort of did a factory-churn thing to get all the images regenerated for the site -- I think you're right, your longboat images weren't that big originally. I'll reconfigure 'em when I get home.

The circuit one is a silly experiment; it wasn't blurry originally, it is now, and it might change back to not-blurry if (as it sounds like) people feel pain examining it. :)

Cool! (And yay for longboats.)

Ah, gotcha, cortex.

In my pixel one I paid homage to several web things, most notably to the winner of the 5k.org contest that was held years ago...does anyone remember that? From about 2000 or 2001 maybe? The contest was to see who could make the most fab thing that was 5k or less and the winner was pixxxel chix, which was a parody of a web porn site done in pixel girl style. I ganked the two naked girl pictures from the site a long time ago to use them for something.

feels, I mean (Hmm....maybe I did have one too many, what was in that trifle again??)

Holy cow...this is the coolest stuff I've seen in ages and ages. All are awesome -- thanks, artists! I must say that I feel deeply in love, immediately, with "Long Boat." Woweeee. Thanks!

I thought it would be more fun if you could rearrange the panels yourself with refreshing.

So I whipped up a version of taz's where you can drag-and-drop to reorder the polyorama to your heart's content. You can probably use any JS effects library to do this; I only used script.aculo.us because I had a copy lying around.

I hasten to add that this is a pony request with an example of the completed pony, rather than an attempt to shamelessly thieve taz+cortex's work.

whoah! Very cool! The only problem is that all the panels for any given set won't fit on most screens/resolutions at once. But it's very, very groovy.
posted by taz 11 March | 12:32
Oh, wait... I see... you could do the randomize, and then rearrange any randomized array. aha!
posted by taz 11 March | 12:35
That's very neat, matthewr. No thievery presumed.

That's awesome, matthewr!

This is so very cool, and makes me weep for my own lack of artistic skills.

Oooo yeah, I forgot. That's how I got in!

Thanks, Miko! Those were made from illustrations from an early 1900s Peter Pan book that I found on Project Gutenberg (or maybe it was the text section of the Wayback Machine).

Interrobang's Myriotel seems so reminicent of Edward Gorey's illustrations. (That's a compliment! I like the vague creepiness, and how refreshing reveals more suprising/creepy scenes).
