There's a DVD of her videos, with her and Kenny Laguna doing intros to all the videos. (I used to have it but don't anymore.) Anyway, Laguna tells the story of trying to get the Beach Boys to do backup on the song. He was told it would never work, that they wouldn't work together anymore, ever. So they kind of manipulated all of them by saying, "No, it's okay Beach Boy X, you don't have to do it -- Beach Boy Y's going to do it instead." And by thus poking the Beach Boys' egos and their competitive natures and their hatred for each other, they managed to get them to record the backup vocals together.

You mean that's actually the Beach Boys doing harmony on this? I just meant that it was that style. The story behind this song just keeps getting better and better. This song is a fucking Rosetta Stone or something.

This is the second time that I've had a revelation like that re: 'I Need Someone.' I owned the cassette of Glorious Results Of A Misspent Youth as a teenager and loved this song especially, but I was reading an old review of the record the other day where the writer refferred to it as an 'updated Belmonts tune.' I assumed he meant the style, but it is an actual cover of a Belmonts song (from the post-Dion era, but still). A Rosetta Stone, like i said.
