07 February 2008

I need confirmation on/solace about how much this sucks. [More:]

Basically, I find myself suddenly unemployed. The woman I've been working for (a contractor) and her boss had a falling out, and they are no longer working with (or speaking to) each other.

So, my job? It's done. And I had no notice. Just a phone call saying "Hey, you need to finish up this project so I can turn it in. And by the way, I'm not going to be doing this work anymore. Thanks!"

This happened about a week ago and I've since finished the unfinished work. The utter unfairness has finally started sinking in, and it goes like this:

When you get laid off, you usually have some warning. When you get fired, you usually have a pretty good idea that you've done something wrong. When you quit, you usually have an inkling that you're miserable (and you hopefully have a backup plan).

I didn't have any of those luxuries. I had no warning, had done no advance job searching, hadn't really been on/in the market. And now I have to hurry up and get a fucking income.

I'm really, really pissed off. It just feels very unfair. It's frustrating and there's nothing I can do about it.

And there's probably a lesson in here about working a 'contract' job without a contract.

*grumble*

Thanks for listening.
And if anyone needs an editor, you know where to find me.

I'm sorry, mudpuppie. Best of luck in your search!

That sucks the most, pups! I'm so sorry, my friend.

UNEMPLOYMENT! DO IT! At least you'll have a little income, usually enough for you to take a couple of desperately-needed weeks off work. Enjoy them and don't stress about being unemployed.

Then, after a hiatus to regain sanity, bust your ass getting something new, and it'll turn up more quickly than you want it!

Seriously, if you can chill a little, this can be an enjoyable thing. And your old job obviously had its foundation built on sand anyway. Better now than when you're REALLY dependent on the income.

You'll be fine. If you can smell the (also unemployed) roses for a while, then enjoy life everytime you have a day off without five job interviews, you'll turn your scars into stars and make limeade out of your limes.
;-)

That does indeed suck, pup, in a very big way. I'd buy you a beer or twelve if I were down your way. And yeah, you should definitely file for unemployment. They owe you that much.

Huge suck. (((mp)))

I just had something really similar happen to me. It's horrible. Take a little time to mourn. It really feels like the ground fell out from under you.

Definitely a huge suck and totally unfair. I hope it works out for you soon.

This really sucks and I heartily second everything said above. Also, was your contract broken in a way that you have recourse? Do you have some power there?

*hugs*

It does indeed suck. And I am keeping my eyes out for any editing job postings for you.

I'm sorry all this fell apart for you. Job searches are no fun at all, let alone surprise job searches. Let me know when I can buy you a beer.

Well, I've had weirder endings to jobs, but they were at places that seemed like they could pine for the fjords at any time, anyway.

I do hope your status does not preclude unemployment.

That's shabby treatment.

Jeez, that IS sucky, pupps. Also very unprofessional and immature on the part of your old boss, I'd say.

Boo, Hiss! You're right - it's a horrible way to have a job end.
Kudos to you for finishing up the work in a professional manner. Hopefully you can garner a good reference from the snake/former employer.

Good thoughts your way.

Wacky idea maybe, but doesn't this mean that her (contractual) boss now needs someone to do what she was doing? Is this something you could/would want to do, and would it make any sense to offer your services? Because it sounds like your gig with her is totally over, so it wouldn't be unethical towards your employer as far as I can tell...

In any case, pupps, big hugs, and yes, it sucks and blows.
posted by taz 08 February | 08:48
I was gonna suggest what taz just says. Can you swoop in and take the contract, or at least, your part of it, directly from the boss?

What you say about your sudden disorientation reminds me (disclaimers about severity, etc etc) of how people feel when an otherwise healthy loved one is suddenly killed by a random heart problem or aneurysm or something. No warning, no inkling, no preparation, just wham! That is a hard adjustment to make. It does suck. I'm sorry to hear about it.

And yeah, I wonder if you can find a way to write this into your future subcontracting contracts? Like that you will be entitled to some portion of the fee whether or not the project goes all the way? Or maybe that would make you less competitive - I dunno.

Anyway, hugs, that was lame.

posted by Miko 08 February | 09:06
You just had the rug pulled out from under you, and it sucks big time. I think Taz has a good idea too, if it's possible. Other than that, you're certainly entitiled to all the frustration you're feeling. That was a thoughtless, cold, cruel thing to do to someone, by cutting them loose in such a way.

WTF, LET'S GET MARRIED.

I'm nthing taz's idea. Any chance of that happening?

Thanks, y'all. I needed validation, I guess.

I don't think I qualify for unemployment since I was technically a freelancer and never had a contract.

The woman I was working for actually incorporated a consulting business so that she could get paid by the university. (They'll pay corporations on an ongoing basis, but not individuals. It's weird and I don't understand it.) So, there's that. Add to that the fact that she was a consultant with expertise in social services -- I just did her writing and editing. So, no, I can't take over for her. If they find someone else to do that work (and they might not), maybe they'll hook me up with that person. But it's also possible that that person will be more comfortable with the English language than my old boss.

I don't really hold anything against the woman I was working for. I know that she reached her limit and it got to the point where she couldn't take it anymore. I can't blame her for cutting it loose. I just wish she had let me know that it was getting that bad. I think she always thought of me as someone who helped her out with stuff, and never realized that I thought of her as my employer. (She should have realized it, but hey -- sometimes people just focus on their own shit.)

Anyway. I'll totally take anyone up on offers of free beer.

And the marriage thing -- maybe. If there's beer.

OH, AND...

I got the following email this morning:

I just wanted to let you know that I finally talked with the university this AM and they have not put through the invoice for the project yet. I guess there is some fiscal issue with accounts or something that S____ is working on. They said that it would be soon. Sorry. As soon as I hear anything I will let you know.

So I'm unemployed and don't even know when I'm going to get paid for the work I've already done. Grrrrrrrrr.
