Then, after a hiatus to regain sanity, bust your ass getting something new, and it'll turn up more quickly than you want it!

Seriously, if you can chill a little, this can be an enjoyable thing. And your old job obviously had its foundation built on sand anyway. Better now than when you're REALLY dependent on the income.

You'll be fine. If you can smell the (also unemployed) roses for a while, then enjoy life everytime you have a day off without five job interviews, you'll turn your scars into stars and make limeade out of your limes.

I just had something really similar happen to me. It's horrible. Take a little time to mourn. It really feels like the ground fell out from under you.

Wacky idea maybe, but doesn't this mean that her (contractual) boss now needs someone to do what she was doing? Is this something you could/would want to do, and would it make any sense to offer your services? Because it sounds like your gig with her is totally over, so it wouldn't be unethical towards your employer as far as I can tell...

I was gonna suggest what taz just says. Can you swoop in and take the contract, or at least, your part of it, directly from the boss?

What you say about your sudden disorientation reminds me (disclaimers about severity, etc etc) of how people feel when an otherwise healthy loved one is suddenly killed by a random heart problem or aneurysm or something. No warning, no inkling, no preparation, just wham! That is a hard adjustment to make. It does suck. I'm sorry to hear about it.

And yeah, I wonder if you can find a way to write this into your future subcontracting contracts? Like that you will be entitled to some portion of the fee whether or not the project goes all the way? Or maybe that would make you less competitive - I dunno.

I don't think I qualify for unemployment since I was technically a freelancer and never had a contract.

The woman I was working for actually incorporated a consulting business so that she could get paid by the university. (They'll pay corporations on an ongoing basis, but not individuals. It's weird and I don't understand it.) So, there's that. Add to that the fact that she was a consultant with expertise in social services -- I just did her writing and editing. So, no, I can't take over for her. If they find someone else to do that work (and they might not), maybe they'll hook me up with that person. But it's also possible that that person will be more comfortable with the English language than my old boss.

I don't really hold anything against the woman I was working for. I know that she reached her limit and it got to the point where she couldn't take it anymore. I can't blame her for cutting it loose. I just wish she had let me know that it was getting that bad. I think she always thought of me as someone who helped her out with stuff, and never realized that I thought of her as my employer. (She should have realized it, but hey -- sometimes people just focus on their own shit.)

Anyway. I'll totally take anyone up on offers of free beer.

And the marriage thing -- maybe. If there's beer.

OH, AND...

I got the following email this morning:

I just wanted to let you know that I finally talked with the university this AM and they have not put through the invoice for the project yet. I guess there is some fiscal issue with accounts or something that S____ is working on. They said that it would be soon. Sorry. As soon as I hear anything I will let you know.

So I'm unemployed and don't even know when I'm going to get paid for the work I've already done. Grrrrrrrrr.
