The Fallout from the S. Cal Fires When I was a kid, October was always the only month when the air at the beach was really bad.[More:] With the Santa Ana winds, all the inland gunk blows to the beach.

I can remember being out on my board, the water very glassy, the air very hot, and coughing from the smog.

This shot is looking north, from Hermosa out to Malibu. Not that you'll see it. You may see a plane or two landing at LAX. . .with the Santa Ana winds, they reverse the usual traffic pattern and land from the ocean side.
Hmm, I'll be heading to LA on Wednesday and then taking Amtrak down to San Diego on Saturday - wonder how all those fires are going to affect my trip.

Your trip on the Coast Starlate should not be effected by the fires. . .

Oy. I drove from LA to SD and back yesterday. Today my eyes feel like sandpaper and I had to take a hit on my inhaler for the first time in years.

Nasty stuff going on.

California is weird.

The last summer I lived in California (Thousand Oaks) we had bad fires. One came within two miles of where my mum and I lived. I had cat carriers and boxes (for preciouses) at the ready, but it was, thankfully, contained.

Dunno if I'm the only OC Mechazen, but the ("Santiago") fire in Orange County is within a mile of my house as the crow flies, and a friend in San Diego is praying that his family's house is still there.

Map of the Santiago fire:

My house is on a line between the words "Mission Viejo" and "unincorporated" on the bottom right of the map. A satellite view of the same area here.

I'm on the other side of the world, and I need more information, and I can't get it. Why did I move so far away again?

And for this to come a week after the MeFi post on the article talking about the insane untenability of Los Angeles on BLDGBLDG? Cruel.

I don't pray often, but I'm sending my prayers for anyone affected directly.
