Radio_ReplicaBlack Planet::Gothic Hell. Early goth and EBM from the early-to-late 80's from my vinyl collection. Some rare stuff, too! Starting at 12PM Pacific/3PM Eastern/8PM GMT, for just under two hours.
Welcome.
Ok, so I've managed to pull together a whole whack of songs from my collection. Most - about 90% - of this is from vinyl, and though I've tried to reduce the pops and scratches, some still show through. It's called "character".
Get your drink of choice, dim the lights and put on your eyeliner, 'cause here we go...
1. My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult - You want danger huh? (0:03)
2. The Specimen - Tell-Tail (3:42)
The Batcave. Where it all started. The Specimen was the house band of The Batcave, and although the Wikipedia entry says that the entry's mostly hearsay, it's true according to what I've heard/read. It's appropriate that nothing's really staked down as being exact, as befitting a legend, as it were. As an added bonus, here's a link to a Batcave documentary, and Specimen playing live (doing 'Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang').
3. Alien Sex Fiend - R.I.P. (Blue Crumb Truck) (3:43)
Rest in peace? Rot in peace. The ASF never did acid, ever, officer. "For children with a hin(dread) past..." From the RIP/New Christian Music 10" EP. Another of the original Batcave bands.
4. The Cramps - You Got Good Taste (3:26)
Psychobilly, or whatever you want to call it, Lux and Ivy are artistes. Live at the Peppermint Lounge, it's The Smell of Female. Dig that dirrrty guitar.
5. Bauhaus - Dive (2:11) You're so necromantic/Venomous and vain From "In The Flat Field" LP. I shouldn't have to explain anything here.
6. Flesh For Lulu - Subterraneans (5:10)
Post-Batcave, but still carrying the torch. FFL went off to do "I Go Crazy", moving away from their Goth roots and died soon after. Fools. This song still rocks it, though.
7. David Bowie - Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) (5:04)
Bowie. Oh, come on, this is too goth. Bauhaus were freaks for him. This album features some guy named Robert Fripp on guitar. You know, whoever *he* is. If you don't know, get thee some education, quick-like! Townshend plays on the album too, but not on this track.
8. The Sisters of Mercy - Body Electric (4:35)
The Sisters. Really early stuff (1984)... this track appears on the CD "Some Girls Wander", although I think this version is superior. In case you were wondering, "Some girls wander by mistake / into the mess that scalpels make" is a line from the Leonard Cohen song "Teachers", from his 1967 album "Songs of Leonard Cohen". One of the tracks on that album is "Sisters of Mercy," and, yes, that's where the band's name comes from.
9. Siouxsie and the Banshees - Overground (3:52)
This track is taken from the Banshees' 4-song EP "The Thorn" released in 1984, the same year as "Hyaena", which is why the similarity in sound.
10. Fields of the Nephilim - Moonchild (5:33)
I was never too much into these guys, mainly for the reason that the singer dude's voice sounds like he should be croaking for a black metal band, and the dischord between that and the music never sat right, good though the music is. FotN's album artwork on this release, "The Nephilim", is really amazing from the cover to the liner sleeve, and this song isn't bad - the music bears up to repeated listenings.
11. My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult - On This Rack (4:37) Bed of sweat! / Bed of nails! The TKK, pre-split. From their 1st album " I See Good Spirits and I See Bad Spirits". The quote earlier on is from "Faster Pussycat, Kill, Kill" which leads us to...
12. 1000 Homo DJs - Apathy (4:34)
Some grungy industro-dance courtesy of Hypo Luxa and Hermes Pan, aka Ministry. Fuckin it up on the Wax Trax label. One of the best band names ever.
13. Revolting Cocks - You Often Forget (Benign) (4:31)
RevCo. Alain Jourgensen of Ministry again, this time featuring the lungs of Luc Van Acker of Belgium, and Richard 23 from Front242 throwing his skills in.
14. 3 Angry Poles - Motorcycle Maniac (4:43
3 Angry Poles Speaking of Luc, here's a 12" he did with a couple of other guys I've never heard of. Released on Wax Trax (sometime between 1986 and 1989 - no date on the 12"!), so I had to grab it. I think I was buying up all the Wax Trax stuff at that time and have at least the first 12 releases. It was a thing. A little aggro never hurt enough people anyone.
15. Die Warzau - Jackhammer (5:10)
Don't know too much about them except they're out of Chicago, but I've always liked their early stuff. Not keen on the funk stuff they did, from what I remember. Heavy on the Front242 influence, and highly political.
Controlled Bleeding, not too much. I've got "Songs from the Grinding Wall". It'll sound dumb, but I never remembered to buy anything by them. Dammit. It's like that with Nurse With Wound as well.
No CB in this set though. Next time for sure.
s_r - Gabriel Fauré? I've never heard anything by him. Another one to add to the list.
16. VNV Nation - Fragments (Splintered Intro) (5:43)
So this track came out in 1999, and just about falls out of the scope of all of this. I'm including it because of the "old-school" EBM sound they got going. More from VNV Nation in later shows, to be sure.
17. The Sisterhood - Finland Red, Egypt White (8:07)
The Sisterhood. Ok, 'member when the Sisters split and went through the nasty legal battles? The aftermath of which Andrew Edrich got to keep the name, and the rest went on to form The Mission. This is the "inbetween" album named "Gift"; basically The Sisters without Wayne Hussey.
18. The Cure - A Short Term Effect (4:19)
From Pornography, and before they started singing goddamn love songs. Ok. I liked those too, but I like these better. Oh, anguish come visit me when I'm alone... mope mope mope. How's my hair?
19. Bauhaus - Telegram Sam (2:08)
The T-Rex cover. Blasphemy though it may be, this is way better than Marc's version. The vid's always been a fave of mine too - gother than fuck, this is.
20. Revolting Cocks - Attack Ships... (4:31)
The very first 12". "No Devotion" / "Attack Ships..." "...On Fire", the 11th Wax Trax release. Man, I can still remember dancing to this at 1 in the morning at the Channel One Klub with my very hot goth girlfriend. Who is still my friend, as it turns out (and still hot). If you're listening, then "hiya, chick - and happy b-day!". :)
21. Belfegore - all that i wanted (4:13)
To quote from TrouserPress, "An American bassist, a Canadian drummer and a German guitarist made up this unique crypto-metal band, a strange incident of subversive musical activity."
25. David J - 4 Hours (3:22)
1/4 of Bauhaus after the split. David J covering a ClockDVA song. Seems the only thing I'm missing here is Peter Murphy doing his solo stuff....
26. Peter Murphy - Final Solution (3:56)
...and here be Mr. Murphy, doing a Pere Ubu cover. From the 1986 album "Should the World Fail to Fall Apart."
27. The Sisterhood - Giving Ground (7:28)
Eldrich and Co. pull it to a close, and the truth lies drowned.
And that's it! I'll probably do a rebroadcast in the future, as it took a while to pull all this together, and I'm sure there are a few people who'd like to hear the whole show.
You're welcome, BP! I've got more early stuff that I have to rip from vinyl, and that'll be on another show with the same theme/feel as this one.
I'm also totally happy that small_ruminant finally got to listen after so many missed connections in the past. Hi to seanyboy too!
