This baby shower stuff is getting ridiculous. I just got an invitation to my cousin's baby shower.[More:]

They include 2 gift registry cards,
Plus a paper asking to bring either your favorite children's book or a scrapbook page you like for the baby's scrapbook,
Plus to enter to win the door prize, you have to pay the entry fee of a pack of diapers!
Ack, make that More Inside, please.

Shower — shit, that's a goddamn cataract! (I'm not sure I'd even both to RSVP with a "no.")*
*I'm assuming you're going to decline, IR?

Christ, I hate that. "entry fee" whatever. It's all gift grubbing. I'm not even big into registries, to be honest. Yes, everyone knows you bring a gift, but what's wrong with just letting people pick something they think you'll like, or they think will be useful, instead of telling them what to buy you? It seems tacky.

But then, I also hate how all entertainment at baby showers seems to revolve around shit. [1]

Maybe it's just me, though. I can't stand that stuff.

[1]last one I went to: guess the candy bar- they'd been melted and smeared into diapers. door prize? they passed out diaper pins, the winner had a shit stain. and so on.

Including registry info in an invitation is just straight-up tacky. No doubt the host's logic is that he/she is making it "easier" for the guests to know what mama wants, but alas that is the thinking of the etiquette-challenged among us. It's even tackier to grub for dollars. If you can't afford to throw a party, for god's sake don't throw one; and if the recipient of the cash is the guest-of-honor, for god's sake, just write her a check, don't make some sorry game out of it.

Showers. Pah.

I'm not going... she's a second cousin. I can't afford to buy stuff for family I never even see.

Wait until the kid's born and they start with the competitive birthday parties.

I never once have bought anything from a registry. I feel completely imposed upon. I should buy a gift because I want to, and I have the right to choose. I have a baby shower to go to today. The second in as many weeks. It's my boss whom I'm friendly with. I really despise the sit around, open your gift and oohing and ah-ing part. It's so mind-blowingly boring and distasteful. Not looking forward to it.

Hrm. I don't mind registries because I hate having to think of gifts. But it's completely tacky to include the registry info in an invitation.

Kellydamnit, I've been to a ton of baby showers and never once have any of the themes revolved around shit. Baffling.

I've always told people I don't do weddings, funerals or showers of any kind. I can't stand formal, stiff, scripted nonsense like that.

A friend of ours is having her first next week. A couple of months ago we went over and painted the new nursery for her & hubby. Took us a long time b/c it had 3 different colors and stripes of different widths. But it came out great! I figured that was a decent contribution, along with a book for the kid's library, and we bailed on the shower.
