Tilt Shift AskMecha Photographers: This is my first try at emulating this technique. Am I doing it wrong?
Your depth of field is a little long/deep and there should substantial bur in the foreground and background. The blur should fade in and out, here's some good examples. Also, slightly larger subject matter would probably help, the verticals on the buildings are so short, your eye doesn't notice the lack of perspective.
Just want to point out that the photos in your link are not done with a tilt shift lens but are instead photoshopped, doctor... (This is not a criticism, but rather to point out that chuck might not be able to get the exact same effect.)
However, I do not have a tilt shift lens (expensive) or a helicopter (very expensive). These 10 images were all achieved by taking photos from high up locations in Roppongi and Ikebukuro in Tokyo, then applying photoshop effects to get a similar look to Barbieri’s tilt shift images.
There was a nice bit in MAKE magazine #9 about how to make a tilt-shift lens for cheap. Uses a Pentacon 6x6 format lens from eBay and a rubber bellows.
