Friday three-point status update [More:]
1. My second day on the training course from hell was even worse than yesterday because the air-con in the building broke down so we were all struggling to stay awake in the heat. Our David Brent-like trainer was beyond parody today.

2. I was so exhausted when I got home that I could not finish my workout. This weekend, and from next week, when my working hours are back to normal, I will be able to get to the gym and get my arse completely into gear (if not into shape - yet).

3. But I have not eaten, or even craved, anything unhealthy this week. I have discovered the delights of miso soup with a big spoonful of flax seed in it, and it's like some kind of magical superfood.
1. There was an episode of Homicide on some cable channel today. Pleasant surprise.
2. Waiting for HJ to return my call.
3. I could go for a crab cake.

Does the miso/flax make you feel full?

1. Got 2 hours sleep because I'm supposed to be designing textile patterns for Latin American bedsheets but am not getting it done because I'm being a horrible, masochistic procrastinator. [Smacks self in head. Ow.]

2. Am very, very tired. And now my head hurts from being smacked.

3. Need to make coffee and start designing textile patterns for Latin American bedsheets. Must. Stop. Checking. Internet.

Does the miso/flax make you feel full?

It seems to, chuckd. Flax is amazing. I was looking for the ground flax last week but could only find whole seed (I've now found a source of ground flax too) so I add the whole seed to the soup and it swells a little after a minute or so. I also add it to muesli and make sure it has a long soak in fruit juice to absorb the liquid. It's important to have it with liquid, either in a food which has a lot of liquid in it, or drinking lots of water with it if you sprinkle it over a salad or something.

It's probably the best source of Omega 3 oils, which are great for so many things - skin, hair, bones, joints, and is also important (I believe) in treating depression. I also take a capsule of flax seed oil every day, along with my other supplements.
posted by essexjan 22 June | 11:39
(I think that one's body does not get the benefit of the Omega 3 oils from flax seed unless it's ground -- we can't break it down enough.)

1. I just discovered why the Seventh Day Adventists are vegetarian, which for some reason makes me happy.

2. I need to buy more cereal so that I can get back to eating flax seed, too!

3. It looks warm outside, but it's not. At least, it wasn't an hour ago. I find deceptive weather troubling.

Can I play?

1. I did 40 at the j-o-b, taught six guitar lessons, and played three sets at various places around here this week. Tonight, I'm staying in and hopefully watching The Prestige or Pan's Labyrinth.

2. I'm whipped... and I drank too many pints last night. It was a fantastic night, though.

3. I should really make salsa and guacamole for the big party tomorrow (triple birthday thing).

2. --
3. Profit
1. I went to the gym today, and mpin class kicked my butt. But at least I got a ride home and didn't have to walk.

2. My daughter is about to walk to Sonic to get us both a hamburger. Sonic is closer than the gym is. Much closer. This. Is. Not. Good.

3. I am GOING to clean my whole house today so I can play tomorrow. Which is why I am bribing myself with the hamburger.

1. I just consolidated a bunch of my files into three-ring binders and used an Old English calligraphic font for the covers, so stuff like "The Global Consumer Basel 2 Consolidator | User Guide v 3.1" and "Basel 2 Business Requirements Document for Retail Exposures v 4.1.0" looks kind classic, kinda gangsta, like I'm either Huguenot or MS-13 (same thing really).

2. Doesn't seem like anyone's taking my oft-repeated advice to listen to the new (2006 maybe) Mando Diao album, "Ode to Ochrasy." Stop dawdling and listen to it. If you think it rocks too hard or scares you, listen to the ballad "The New Boy," track 10 on the US release. If you're in Europe you can see them in Germany and their native Sweden over the summer. Because God and I are tired of you listening to lame music.

3. I left a message, jonmc. I'll be there when the moon drips blood in the sky and the cackling of warlocks fills the villagers with dread. About sixish?

3b. I figure, if we tip people for good service, we can beat them for bad service. That will instill the proper work ethic and sense of propriey in footmen and head-waiters alike.

1. I finally get a weekend for the first time in 12 days. Yay!
2. Now, what to do with that weekend - clean and mow and stuff or chuck it all and go up to Bat Cave to see my friend and take pictures of fat tourists?
3. There are only 2 people even at work today. Ahhh, mellow.

If I did that, I'd have to beat about 30,000,000 service workers in the UK. I'd need to wear boxing gloves every time I left the house.

Outside of my girlfriend, I have no friends

Yes you do.
1. I finally got a proper x-ray, and it's offical: my spine is intact. Yay, spine! No explanation yet for the pain, but I'm not getting bogged down in the bad news yet, because - in case I didn't mention - my spine is intact. I don't ask for much.

2. I am now cleared for gentle exercise, so I went for a walk, bought myself some flowers to celebrate (funnily enough, I see now that I chose long, nubbly stalky flowers: snapdragons, bells of Ireland, and the like, all long and curved like a spinal column), and came home to bed.

3. I didn't know how scared I was until I started crying with relief.

(Yeah, what occhiblu said about ground flaxseed. I buy the seeds whole, grind them in a coffee grinder, put the resulting flaxseed meal in a glass bottle in the fridge. I love the stuff in bread, on brown rice or oatmeal or in granola, and I sneak it into oatmeal raisin bars, too.)

1. A little worn out: I "officially" have the day off but am still doing office work while at home.

2. A little disappointed: I will be at MoCCA Saturday and Sunday with only issue #1 of my comic (issue #2, sadly, didn't make deadline). And, because of my already crazy weekend plans I won't be meetin' up tonight.

3. A little hell yeah excited: I will also have my CDs which came yesterday. And, I'm playing a show Saturday night as well.

1. I like flaxseeds unground, even if you don't get the stellar health benefits that way. The golden ones are utterly delicious and I add them to everything. I just try to chew a lot.

2. The people I work with get distractingly frisky on Fridays.

3. I'm about to head out for a walk around the block to stretch my legs and refocus.

Interrobang, y'all need to run out and buy yourself a copy of The Bends. Then you can repeat your update, but with the appropriate power chords.

1. It was 104 degrees * today, but

2. I still went out, because I needed to get money, and the closest ATM (not very close!) is also by the Friday Farmer's Market, so I shopped, too. I bought veggies, flowers, and a thermometer... that read 100 degrees under the shade of the vendor awning. So,

3. I stopped at the cute cafe on the way back and had a bottle of water and a big, big beer. But no more long walks for me 'til sometime next week.

1. Somehow, I have reaggravated a pinched nerve in my shouder and it's not making me happy. I've done PT, I've done chiropractic, and am seriously considering accupuncture, even though needles freak me out like nobody's business.
2. Luminous Phenomena's comment made me realize that it could be worse.
3. jokeefe's made me laugh pretty hard.

1. Crohns relapsed, so I'm now on the second round of medication and upped levels of steroids which give me insomnia, make me gain weight, and short tempered, among other things
2. I was selected for a "major award" which I can't talk about yet. It's not a lamp shaped like a lady's leg. As far as I know.
3. Work's going well.

Day trip to London.
1. The Tube is far better/easier/quicker/cheaper than I expected. But apparently you're not supposed to nip out the emergency doors from carriage to carriage while the train is moving. Hopefully this is a slap-on-the-wrist sort of thing rather than a straight-to-Guantanamo offence.
2. Saw more chauffeured Bentleys/Rolls-Royces in Whitehall and the City in 10 minutes than I have in the rest of the country in 10 years. Clearly I must leave the provinces behind and get a job here ASAP!
3. Othello at the Globe: tres awesome, and good value. A standing ticket (for "groundlings" in Shaks parlance) costs about the same as an M&S sandwich. And they had Pimm's at the interval! What's not to like?

1. Just put new brake pads on my favorite bike. Now it stops really, really well. And it's got additional colorful anodized parts, which is great, because, bike-wise, I love the (late '80s/early) '90s like I'm Hal Sparks or somebody. Next on the agenda for this bike, which has become a sort of retro/cruising/boozing project, I scour eBay for some crazy CNC cranks, Cook Bros. or Grafton or somebody.
2. Work tomorrow, and I managed to convince J to watch Scooby-Doo 2 with a bunch of kids, so now I don't have to. Also, I've got a turkey sandwich in the refrigerator there, and I just ripped some RJD2 instrumentals to my work computer.
3. Just watched the metal episode of The Seven Ages of Rock, which isn't quite in Adam Curtis territory but is still pretty good. The Beeb's got some good documentary series.

I'm so sorry, Luminous Phenomenom.

1. Taking today (Saturday) off just because.
2. Husband had to get up at 4:45 to leave for a training meeting in Pennsylvania. I made him coffee and a breakfast wrap. Then I washed the kitchen floor before the kids got up, did laundry, dusted, vacuumed, drove the daughter to work, bought a new DVD player, came home. Hubby came home, we visited the father-in-law, shopped, made dinner, and hung out. Nice.
3. Taking a hike with the hubby alone in the morning. The rest of the day is up in the air.
