There was much consideration of what to start the set off with. How many proto- or pre- punk bands to include? How about Kick out the Jams by MC5 or maybe something by the Fugs?
That Gang Of Four is better than I remembered. (I had always classified them in the 'Bands I respect immensley but arent my cup of tea' file, but it's rockier and more jaggedy than I remembered.
Here's a great case of why song chronology is a goofy ordering principle. Dead Kennedy's have been around since the end of the 70s. This kind of misalignment happens in spots throughout the list.
2002-2007
Mt. Dew - Born Against (2002 - Born Against on wikipedia)
Kill My Friends - The Bronx (2003 - The Bronx on wikipedia)
Pulling The Christmas Pig By The Wrong Set Of Ears - The Locust (2003 - The Locust on wikipedia)
Trash Flavored Trash - The Blood Brothers (2004 - The Blood Brothers on wikipedia)
Listen to the Painters - The Ex (2004 - The Ex on wikipedia. Another band that has been around for years.)
Think About Carbs - Hot Snakes (2005 - Hot Snakes on wikipedia)
Everybody Knows - The Evens (2006 - The Evens on wikipedia. The pedigree, the political lyrics and the strum pattern are all punk, but I'm stretching it just a bit with this the third to last track.)
Take Everything - Division of Planes (2007 - My band's site. Come on, how could I resist?)
Bomb. Repeat. Bomb - Ted Leo / Pharmacists (2007 - Ted Leo on wikipedia)
Damn - even though I own most of that stuff - it would have been pretty awesome to hear it put together so nicely. I wish I was online when you did it. It's easy to point out what you missed, but you'd have had to add a few hundred more songs to cover most of the bases. Niely done. Some great choices.
There were about 10 artists I had on CD but didn't include. All other omissions were due to them being on cassette or vinyl or in some cases not owning. But then, I didn't set out to do a complete history (knowing I would go way way over our typical 2 hour radio time slots); I just wanted to get a nice robust punk set going. I had a great time going over my collection and choosing songs, if there are some stand-out ommissions go ahead and mention them. I'm going to do some record shopping the first of next month. :)
