Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? I don't know if this show makes me feel good or really, really sad.[More:]

Questions on tonight's show:
1. What color do you get if you mix red and yellow?
2. What star is closest to earth?
3. What country has the longest border with the USA?
4. True or false: Fiction books are not assigned numbers in the dewey decimal system.
5. How many decades are in two millennia?

I'm happy that I knew the answers, but am saddened that the woman stood there and said, "Is the sun a star? I mean, it's not a planet. Is it?"
4 is false, yes?

I took the quiz on the website. All correct except number one. Place a dunce cap on my head. I chose Argentina, I really knew Brazil was big...

I can't keep up with the new shows. Besides, my three-year-old wouldn't go to bed, so I couldn't watch anything. I think we read "Hop on Pop" at least five times.

And in its privileged timeslot after Idol, 5th Grader apparently got the highest rating ever of any 1st episode of a show on Fox. Let's see how it does on Thursday with all the rough competition...

yes, 4 is false

4 is... arguably tricky and complicated. The short answer is 'false,' but given a particular fiction book and a particular library, there's a pretty good chance it doesn't have a Dewey number on the spine. The typical public library assigns DDC call numbers to old literary fiction (i.e., Canterbury Tales or Don Quixote or whatnot), and to poetry/drama/essays/etc., but not to contemporary stuff. School libraries are similar, except that they're less likely to have Canterbury Tales.

A DDC number could be assigned to any book ever written. But in most libraries that a fifth-grader would be likely to visit, most if not all of the fiction books are filed by author, and maybe genre, but not Dewey Decimal number--JUV FIC ROWLING, or MYSTERY CHRISTIE, instead of something that starts with 800.

I got one wrong on the website's quiz too. Fuckin' autumnal equinox. That question is climate biased in favor of people who live in places with seasons.

I also got one wrong on the website's quiz. Ostriches. I was thinking road runner. Fuck Time Warner, man.

I think the way #4 was phrased is the key for me. The statement sounds to me like the system does not allow number assignments for fictional books. That's false.

Or, just listen to the 6th graders.

Oh, yeah, #4's clearly false, but I think it's the hardest of those questions.

And those sixth-graders make the point better than I did.

I got the ones that depend on US political and northern hemisphere knowledge wrong and I'm only as smart as a 4th grader (from the Web quiz). Sounds about right.

I'm not ashamed to admit that I missed number 2. Totally a trick question.

I want to like the show but it seems too fakey. Those are not real 10 year olds. They may actually *be* 10, but those are professional actors *playing* real kids.

I missed one online, I think it was the how many sides question.

It was the how many sides question.

What bugs me about the show is how, with all the faked hemming-and-hawing and suspense-building pauses, they only got through ~6 questions in a half hour. I'll take good old fashioned Jeopardy any day, not so much because the questions ("answers") are harder, but because they usually get through 61 of them in a half hour.
