Style check, please. I've been growing out my facial hair, and someone informed me yesterday that it's not trendy. Opinions, please!
Better like this?
Or better like this?
I think # 1 is nicer.

I foolishly named the old, close-trimmed picture "beard2", so can I clarify... you liked the close-trimmed look better?
posted by agropyron 26 February | 17:46
#1, for sure. I find long facial hair creepy- men best keep it trimmed.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 26 February | 17:46
The "Better like this" link looks better.

And p.s., you're such a cutie patootie!
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 26 February | 17:50
I'm sorry, yes. The closer-trimmed look.
posted by viachicago 26 February | 17:51
The trimmed one is much better
posted by TheDonF 26 February | 17:57
definitely the close-trimmed look, which i should say goes very well with your facial features / bone structure.

with the aside that there seems to be a current rage for the wild bushy untrimmed look amongst college guys. i, for one, have never been a fan of any facial hair on men (mostly...as with anything there are exceptions and my SO wears a close-trimmed goatee to keep from looking fourteen) but I particularly dislike the 'i work in a tattoo parlour' look. and the transient / stalker look. and especially the grizzly adams look. but that's just me and i'm old and come from a (somewhat) conservative upbringing and work in a corporate environment, so don't mind me and i'll just sun myself here on the driveway in my lawnchair with the garden hose kthxbye.

The longer beard is cool but it probably would go over better if you smiled in that one.

In my book that's an endorsement. Coincidentally, I've grown mine out the same way. We can hang out and tell people we're in a gang.

I like the mustach from 1 and the beard from 2.
posted by muddgirl 26 February | 18:09
Kidding aside, I like the bushier beard. Combined with the shaved head, it gives you this great bar bouncer/outlaw biker vibe.
posted by jonmc 26 February | 18:13
Trim it, ya hottie!
posted by jrossi4r 26 February | 18:16
Thanks for the opinions. And thanks jonmc :)

Close-trimmed certainly is widely preferred. A little surprising to me; I had expected more of an even split.

tps..... *blush*

in your case, trimmed. . .

I'm supportive of anybody's facial hair that doesn't look like Mickey Jones, who, although his website doesn't mention it, is coming to San Luis Obispo this Friday for a showing of his Bob Dylan Tour Movie at the local Film Festival (and, if he reads this, he'll also stop by to whoop my ass).
posted by wendell 26 February | 18:38
I dont' mind either, agro, but I think #1 shows off your lovely face more (just to sound like your mom) so you should go with that one.
posted by gaspode 26 February | 18:44
me, too - trimmed.
posted by taz 26 February | 18:50
This reminds me of a social psych experiment. People tend to rate the smiling face higher, regardless.

STOP TOYING WITH US, AGRO! At the very least, you have to get us to sign a release form. And did you clear this post through the human subjects committee?
posted by Eideteker 26 February | 18:50
Depends on the overall effect you want to achieve.

Shorter: I do a little reading when I'm not rocking the computer. You can trust me.
Longer: I'm on my way to my court ordered anger management class. You might want to cross the street.

(Though this is somewhat also the product of the images -- the one that stands for the shorter look has more of a smile, warmer lighting, less blue in the background, and you are closer to the camera. While in the photo for the longer look the subject is further from the camera, with 'colder' lighting, and more blue in the background. The facial expression, is also less expressive).

I thought that the "Iron and Wine" beard was in. Or was that last year?

Don't listen to trends.
posted by matildaben 26 February | 18:55
Don't ask me about my comments.

Also, basically all that little text is summed up by what Eideteker said.
posted by safetyfork 26 February | 18:56
Longer: I'm on my way to my court ordered anger management class.

Exactly, the furry look says "I ooze testosterone. don't fuck with me" and "I am an alpha male." I've noticed that since I've revived the beard and the long hair, people get out of my way quicker.
posted by jonmc 26 February | 18:58
This is a crappy fast photoshop job and I have no idea what your chin looks like, but you could totally pull off a handelbar moustache.

I vote for the handlebar mustache. Now see, that would be cool.

posted by brina 26 February | 19:06
oooh agropyron, they're BOTH nice. But since you already have it longer and everyone says trim it, I think you should seek out a barber who can give it a good trim because I think something in between might be the best! Here I come messing things up with a third alternative! HA! I've been jelous that guys can do that, go to proper barber shops (they do still exist right?) and have a beard fashioned into like, a beard hairstyle! With the longer you have a great colour but I'm thinking it might need to be cut a little different.

Ot holy crap, yeah the handlebar is actually hip as heck here in Sweden. :)
posted by dabitch 26 February | 19:08
Most men look better with long hair and beards. I don't trust the clean-shaven, short haircut look. Very creepy.

Hey brina, that handlebar stache is nice! He could pull it off.

The Fu Manchu 'stache¿ Yikes./ I'll chime in that #1 does have a smile and as the record suggests, makes one look more appealing. I agree with what dabitch mentioned, go to a barber and get it started by a pro.
My guess is that fashion dictates a fuller face 'o hair. That 'more than 5 o'clock shadow' is history. I think it also depends where one lives and the size of the city...

I too shave my head and am sporting the The Seth Bullock, 'cause I like Deadwood. I've been told I look like a porn star. It does look sleazy. What a laugh. I'll wear my straw cowboy hat to finish off the look, even though it's snowing like crazy here now.

posted by hojoki 26 February | 21:12
If I recall correctly about three or four. Plus I was in New Jersey.
posted by jonmc 26 February | 21:17
I was going to say trimmed is better. But no, you had to go and do the handlebar 'stache thingie.

Actually, it's not a favourite look of mine but your face can handle it and it looks great.

Reminds me of the auto-mechanic from the RV park we last lived at. Tall, at least 6'4", shaved head and handlebar mustache, dimples, muscular but not too muscular, had some meat on him, cute ass.

I'll be in my bunk.
posted by deborah 26 February | 21:34
I was going to say trimmed was better but the handle bar is pretty good too. If you were going to grow it out you need to increase the area too IMO.
posted by Mitheral 26 February | 21:55
The mustache says both, "I'm funny and approachable" and "back off, man, or I'll shiv ya". (My boo just grew a great thick mustache, and I think it's the greatest thing ever).
posted by muddgirl 26 February | 21:56
It also allows you to taste whatever he had for lunch. Mmmm, flava-sava.

This thread is the reason the web was invented. I see it now. (The new look is AWESOME, agro!)
posted by BoringPostcards 27 February | 07:56
Okay, I haven't read the other comments yet, I just wanted to chime in...

How about a compromise? Trim the 'stache a bit shorter than the chin. My husband tried this (same sort of look, shaved head, goatee) and I loved it except for the fact that part of his goatee grows out to the right. He had to take it back down due to that fact. Not that I mean to grow the chin hair so long as to braid it, but I kind of like the slightly longer look.

Now I'll go back and read everyone else.

Oh, and you're very cute, too.
posted by redvixen 27 February | 09:24
On preview: I like the handlebar on you. You have a very nice face, so you can probably get away with any style you choose.
Jonmc, chococat's #2 is quite debonair, but it could be the hat.

Agro, the handlebar is awesome. Props to you for being spontaneous and daring. It looks way good. And it definitely doesn't follow a trend - hell, it may even start one.

Actually, it kind of is a trend, at least where I live. But I like it.
My friend has the exact moustache.

Don't several movie stars have handlebars right now?

posted by agropyron 27 February | 13:00
I thought a handlebar moustache was one that was waxed and curled, a la Rollie Fingers. I thought what agro has was called a Fu Manchu.
posted by Eideteker 27 February | 23:24
I believe Eide is correct. In lieu of taking my word for it, though, you can always go to the authorities.
posted by box 27 February | 23:33
Thanks, box, I thought I was going insane. I don't know where you people got the idea that a Fu Manchu was a "handlebar", but if it doesn't stick off your face (I love the term "graspable extremities"), it's not a handlebar!
posted by Eideteker 27 February | 23:47
I don't know about everyone else, but I got the idea from chococat.
posted by agropyron 28 February | 00:59
You're not smiling in #2, so it's not really a fair comparison.

I like #1 a hair better, I think, but only because #2 looks sort of like a pirate. And if the goal is to look piratey, #2 wins by a landslide.
