What?! Requests for specific mp3's is a no-no? Since when? I'm tres confused!
I'm sure I remember reading something either the FAQs or the Wiki about requests for things being frowned upon, but I couldn't find it. I guessed it also extended to MP3s as, well, it's essentially file sharing and not a good thing.
on preview: exactly mudpuppie; there's a great thing going on here and we'd be poking our heads over the parapet if we essentially started trading stuff.
I think the rules were fairly simple: be discreet, be familiar, don't overdo it. Screaming that you want to trade .mp3s all over the front page screws up numbers one and three and IIRC the name was not one that I know well. Taz & seanyboy stand to land in a world of shit if those rules are routinely disregarded so for chrissakes, people, have some common sense and calm down.
aHAhaHAHAHAha
i'm sure no one could possibly know what anyone is talking about.
Who's for unraveling this thread?
i'll heat up some veggie dumplings or dole out the rest of the booze.
Yes, to say that I'm baffled by the request is an understatement, but it's pretty obvious what the rules are going to have to be.
TPS is correct that it was probably a matter of time until the hammer had to come down, as the site gets larger and people don't really know what's what. We hoped to sort of tread the fine line set by music blogs, etc., and keep it low key, but that requires some sort of unspoken agreement about how people would individually deal with things on the site. On our end, we obviously can't make a statement saying "woohoo, everyone trade files!" And we can't make a bunch of "X is okay but Y isn't, because there are no safe legal guidelines for that that I've found. So.
Great, now it smells like britney spears in here.
Can we change that to "specific no nos" and "trading mi mis"?
With all the booze, i'm sure we will be soon.
Or just yank it.
As this place doesn't actually host anything, i think it falls within safe limits but what they hooey---
So ... if I make another mix, I shouldn't share it?
That would be quite sad.
I think it comes down to having some sense. Just don't ask for files outright, not of any kind. In other words, maybe Q -- blessed be his initial -- was being a bit too exact. It appears to me that mentioning a simple desire to hear a given song (or type of song) is usually enough to inspire another person's generosity. You know, like you'd do in any other social setting.
And I love the "You've-gotta-hear-this" posts we get from time to time. After all, the SendUIts and so on, they last no longer than a week. They do no harm, they are not hosted locally and they just might result in an actual purchase of the posted artist's work.
Discretion is the better part of valor. And all that. I wouldn't have thought that was so hard to grasp.
Or, what grabbingsand said. Act appropriately in situations where there are no defined rules, and there won't be a need for defined rules. This applies to many areas of life, MeCha being just one.
Despite the occasional request for some song or other, I don't think any MeChazen is dim or brazen enough to ask for mp3s of popular current music. I don't see why we need some defined rule about posting or requesting music when it seems like everybody has been acting with appropriate discretion.
So, a little background here: there was a post just before this one from a relatively new user that asked if this was a place to ask for specific mp3s, a member answered that no, it wasn't, and the original poster said, okay - delete away! And I deleted away.
Mischief's link in this post actually has nothing to do with anything, and, in fact, I'm going to unlink it to avoid confusion. (too late, yeah - but it was like 2 a.m. my time when this was posted. o_0 )
It reminds me of Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol, but we didn't get no razzleberry dressing and Tiny Tim died.
Can't we just make it go away or does it have to bear witness to forestall some other dimwit from asking where it went and what's the policy of beating people with sticks around here and can i share my lunch?
Was everyone just a little on the ugly side of drunk?
Arsehat, maybe you and i could fake the bulk of a thread with a very similar title.
i'm still rooting for specific no-nos.
(After another deleted post, where somebody asks where to download a specific song from an RIAA member artist, and bearing in mind that I was the person who answered, in the first deleted post, that, no, this wasn't a place to ask for specific mp3s,) do we need more discussion, or more moderators, or a bigger sign, or something else, or what?
