11 January 2007

An evening of murder, bunnyhugs and curry [More:]Thankfully the rain held off for me to meet up with Krix & Saf for the Jack the Ripper walking tour, followed by a curry at the Lahore Kebab House.

The tour was really interesting, the guide was a very pretty blonde whose been a Ripperologist since her teens. She was really knowledgeable, and, apart from showing us the locations of the murders, also had lots of photos of the victims and of the streets as they looked at the time. Much of that part of London has changed (thanks, largely, to the Luftwaffe) so it was really interesting to see the photos of the streets in the 1880s as we stood on the modern location.

Then we had a curry at the best curry house in London, the Lahore Kebab House. We actually walked along Brick Lane as part of our tour, but the curry houses there are nowhere near as good or authentic as the fabulous Pakistani food we ate tonight.

We had chicken tikka, mutton tikka, sheekh kebab, tandoori lamb chops, poppadoms, raita, salad and roti to start, followed by chicken biryiani, tarka daal, sag ghosh and pilau rice. There was enough left over for me to take away for Sunday dinner.

Much to the bemusement of the waiters, we did a few shoutouts, but I have absolutely no idea whatsoever what Saf's are about. I think his trip to the Writer's Museum in Dublin has affected his brain!

Krix and Saf are two of the lovliest people I know and they deserve all the happiness in the world.
Saf is clearly channeling the spirit of the Tap.

Oh, and at the end of the Ripper tour we walked by Tubby Isaacs Jellied Eel stall which I pointed out to Krix and Saf. Krix had never heard of whelks, which I pointed out to her, they're an East End delicacy. There is not enough money on earth that would make me eat a bowl of whelks.

A Cockney geezer was standing there with his bowl of whelks and he insisted that Jack the Ripper had eaten there too. I think, perhaps, that he was stretching the truth juuust a little bit ...

Agreed, seafood is weird. However, you are successfully filling me with conflicting desires for either a good curry or a good serving of pie, mash and liquor.

Hey, I think I went on that tour... in 1984! (Any new victims since then?)

Love to you and Krix and Saf... that food sounds amazing...

I think we should have a MeCha meetup at a pie & mash shop.

BTW, what's all this about you leaving London?

It's true! I am moving in with my love (assuming the rental agency gets their arse in gear in time) near her new job an hour's train ride north of London. Definitely still close enough for pie and mash meet-ups.
