The Departed was poo. Agree with me or are you misguided?
Matteo seems to agree with you, though I'm not sure that precludes his being misguided as well. I'll leave that to you two to work out.

It wasn't that bad in the same way that Crash wasn't Best Picture.

Crap, my own fault for not scrolling down.

And.. matteo has impeccable taste so it doesn't surprise me that he hated it, too.

And.. matteo has impeccable taste

in movies and books, generally, yes. in popular music..I'm educating him...

I assume this wasn't a personal attack on me. Though I am crying.

Dobbs, please get over yourself.

mlis, sure... who the fuck are you again?

if you two pull out your penises and a ruler, I'm declaring this thread over....
posted by jonmc 31 October | 23:05
I was being serious. I don't recall ever having seen the username before and thought it odd that someone who's never entered my radar before would know I'm full of myself.
posted by dobbs 31 October | 23:11
jon, you close the thread and I'll grab the ruler and run, OK?
posted by danf 31 October | 23:31
jon: That 'penis' crack should have a spoiler tag.

dobbs: mlis has been around quite awhile.
posted by mischief 31 October | 23:45
mischief, I can see that (from his history and contacts on the blue), but I still have no clue who he is or why's upset with me. I accept (and sometimes expect) cracks like that on the blue, but I don't expect (or accept) them on MeCha. In fact, I thought they were pretty much verbotten. So, being on the wrong end of one, especially from someone I don't recall having ever bantered with, is a little surprising.

The remark being followed by comments from 3 people I do know, none of whom seemed to have thought the remark out of line, is equally disturbing.

WTF?

OMG I HATE PETER GREENAWAY WITH A PASSION USUALLY RESERVED FOR CILANTRO ENEMAS.

*hopes that creates a small diversion*
posted by mudpuppie 01 November | 00:54
Yeah, I've been measuring my directors' worth in Ronaldo Violas, especially with the dollar so weak.
posted by eatitlive 01 November | 00:56
Who the hell is Peter Greenaway?
posted by cmonkey 01 November | 00:56
Scorsese, is not batting a thousand but hey, Peter Greenaway never rose above filmatic wanker and who is Bill Viola?
posted by arse_hat 01 November | 00:58
boo! all of you. Greenaway is nearly God. Cause God himself is Felini. Grrrr!
posted by carmina 01 November | 01:11
shit. Fellini. I hate you all. Boo! I say.
posted by carmina 01 November | 01:12
I like to believe Felini would not deign to pee on Greenaway were M. Greenaway ablaze.
posted by arse_hat 01 November | 01:16
I so happen to believe, I died, just now. And went to Hell.
posted by carmina 01 November | 01:17
same for Fellini! ;)

"I so happen to believe, I died, just now. And went to Hell."

Did you see Greenaway there?
posted by arse_hat 01 November | 01:19
I am dead, you know. You can stop beating me now. :)

Sorry dobbs for the derail, but Greenaway is one of my favorite directors of all time. How can you not like something like this? You are all horrible people. No more candy for you! And it is not even halloween anymore. I hated the way the Mefi thread turned out yesterday. I have no words. Just despair.

I am going back to being dead.

Bill Viola is an amazing artist who does big museum installations, I saw his SF MOMA show a few years ago. Why Peter Greenway wants to compare him to Scorsese I'm not sure. If Viola is worth 10 Scorseses, he's worth at least a few hundred Greenways.

Aw carmina I feel so bad I almost want to go to that youtube link. but.

I hate those fuzzy youtube things so I won't.

Still, come back, we love u!
posted by arse_hat 01 November | 01:39
doctor_negative, if Bill is worth a few hundred Greenways I will take the time to search him out. (any links you can offer to save some time?)

aww, that's nice. My coffin is glowing! Like in a Greenaway movie...

carmina, hope you enjoy this much longer interview with Greenaway than those YouTube chunks, if you haven't already seen it.

doc_neg, I saw that SFMOMA retrospective too. Passage was the highlight for me. Seven hours of ultraslowed, video of kids eating cupcakes, shown on a huge wall in a very tight space. There's a little bit of Bill Viola on YouTube, if you can stand the fuzziness. Of those Reflecting Pool is probably most representative of his floruit period.
posted by eatitlive 01 November | 01:55
But still it's no Ronaldo Viola.
posted by eatitlive 01 November | 01:57
oooh thank you eatitlive. I have not seen Suitcases (neither tv nor the movie). He talks about everything...

Umm Dobbs, i rather liked The Departed...and i even started a previous thread about it. Different strokes for different folks dude, so calling anyone who doesn't agree with you misguided is rather misplaced, dontcha think?
posted by ramix 01 November | 03:07
I had a vague feeling that I'd read something with LT's (borrowed) violence scale regarding The Departed. I thought it was from MeFi or somewhere.

But as ramix points out, this is actually a triple post.

Bring on the pink bunny on a hillside...
posted by GeckoDundee 01 November | 05:44
I thought The Departed was somewhat better than Scorsese's last few movies, but I think his last truly excellent movie was Kundun, which was a while ago. Bringing out the Dead, Gangs of New York, and The Aviator I haven't felt the need to see again.

The screenplays he's working with have been the problem, I think--in particular, The Aviator had a screenplay by the same guy who wrote Star Trek: Nemesis, and it's godawful. I wish he'd go back to co-writing.

It is not my place to defend anyone really, and dobbs is a big boy to defend himself, however, I think you are all a little hard on him. I personally thought with "Agree with me or are you misguided" and "matteo has impeccable taste...(because he agrees with him)" he was being a little facetious and teasing. Should we take everything literally on MeCha?
posted by carmina 01 November | 10:48
I agree wholeheartedly with carmina, it was just high sprits and foolin.
