Better, than nothing, I suppose. [More:]After my little rant the other week, I had a meeting today with the manager, who has agreed to increase my bonus to about £600 (about $1,000). I'll have to pay 40% tax and 11% National Insurance on it, so it'll be under £300 when it hits my pay packet, but it's enough to buy me an external hard drive.

At lunchtime today I was reading my issue of The Lawyer magazine, where it was reporting on bonuses earned by associates in City law firms. The average bonus is more than my basic salary. But they have no life, I have to remember that. My job is great, 90% of the time, but the 10% that sucks, sucks hugely.
Concentrate on that 90%, if you can! Sorry you didn't get what you were entitled to. That does suck.

essexjan, if it makes you feel any better I met a London solicitor working for the government on policy issues last week on hols with his brother. He was anything but kind about his work hours/pay nor his brother (hedgefund operations based in city), both lamenting the simple fact they both had no life outside of work aside from a four day vacation to see their sister being married....

And quite honestly, I agreed with them. To hear it described was slightly akin to watching reruns of "Yes, Minister"....

They were especially shocked to find out people actually do have lives and kept wondering if there were many instances of Brits moving up north to enjoy civilised work weeks and people that don't value the 24/7 commitment to slaving away for money.

Time is definitely worth more to me than money. I'm glad they upped your bonus, jan, even if it doesn't turn out to be that much.

Yeah, all in all, it's a great job. The work and benefits are awesome. The aggravation comes from management. Mostly I keep my head down and get on with it, but the requirement to complete more and more bits of paper or online forms just to give them another stick to beat us with is wearying.

But I remember the 7 weeks' paid holiday, free health and dental insurance, subsidised cafe, 2 days a week working from home (which, if I get my act together and do the work as soon as I get home, means effectively I have a part-time job), the jeans 'n' t-shirt dress code, etc., make it so much better than any other job I've ever had, or would ever find anywhere else.
