Workout the Jams! What are your favorite workout jams?
Pretty much anything by Missy Elliot.

Hell yeah! Missy Elliott droppin' bombs all over the joint. DOWN SOUTH PLAYAS!

I also dig a little 60 Foot Dolls or the odd techno album or Turbonegro or Toots and the Maytals, something along those lines. But I usually don't listen to music because I sweat from the ears and with all earphones, eventually the sweat will pool in a concavity, cool off some, and give me the willies something awful.

What is this thing called 'workout' of which you speak?

The idea of workout is as old as humanity itself, and the word workout seems to have ancient origins. The Merriam-Webster dictionary gives the etymology of the word as Greek forxaes, probably from the verb forxesthai meaning "to destroy, to build anew." The Proto-Indo-European root *workos for "pumping iron," originally an adjective meaning "painful" or "boring, stultifying" has retained this meaning in many related Indo-European languages and cultures (Sanskrit wawa, Latin vaercus, German dorito), but also provided another other common word for workout in Avestan, wrkt. In modern Greek, the word ωνδαίμ has the same meaning as the modern English workout. But in Ancient Greek, ωνδαίμ meant "built" or "all ripped up", much like the Latin flabius, which is the source of the word "flab."

90s techno works really well. So does a lot of Bruce. So do Paul Simon's Graceland and Rhythm of the Saints. Mostly, I listen to multi-genre mixes I've made. On cassette. Yeah, time to srping for an mP3 player.

I have a weird combination of Garbage, Beastie Boys and yes, Minor Threat as my running music.

Zombie, Garbage, Amr Diab, Pogues, various upbeat Scottish trad tunes, Tarkan, Diatribe, belly dance mixes.

Weird how hard it is to remember all of them, considering that I've listened to them to death. Looks like I should be trying Missy Elliot.

Oh yeah, Beastie Boys, too.

I have a couple playlists on my mp3 player specifically targeted for various 'moods' of cycling workouts. The most aggro of these includes a mixture of Rage Against The Machine, Crystal Method, Marilyn Manson, Prodigy, Missy Elliot (omg YES!!) and Ladytron.

Hip hop mashups are super sweet to run/bike/elliptica/(swim?) to because they keep the mood up and who cares about the lyrics. DJ Original is my favorite right now. Also, oddly, Weezer, and the first Yeah Yeah Yeahs album. A live Tenacious D concert. Those are the 4 albums I rotate thru.

Is it weird that I listen to whole albums even when I'm working out?
