Reassure Me! So...I just backed into a coworker's truck in the parking lot. There's a dent about 3"x1.5"...[More:] Please please reassure me that a) he's not gonna try and screw me over with this, and b) the damage won't be too expensive. Was it a big mistake that I didn't take pictures? How much will removing a dent like that cost? What should I do now? Ahhhhhh! (if you can't tell, this is my first incident involving someone else's car, and I'm a little freaked)
If it's a smooth gentle dent and you didn't stretch the metal or put a sharp crease or fold into it, it should pop out without too much fuss or bother. If either of you have a relative at a body shop who will do this in fine American shade-tree style (i.e. not at his place of business), there's no need to get the insurance involved.

The hard part in fixing little itty bitty dents is matching and blending the paint surrounding it.

Maybe your coworker is willing to deal? Maybe he doesn't want his insurance notified? Maybe she's a nice carbon life unit? Maybe your coworker is named Damian with 666 on the forehead?

So don't freak out. Your chance of having destroyed the personal transportation for Satan's offspring is relatively low.

Factors to consider: location of damage, extent (as warbaby points out: dent, crease, fold; as well as how much damage to paint/finish), etc.

I was hit in a parking lot -- damage to the front quarter panel. Ends up that they could replace the front quarter panel...but needed to repaint the hood and running boards to match the paint of the new panel, etc. It all turned out to be much more expensive than I had anticipated. Luckily, the other driver's insurance covered it all -- and agreed to the body shop's procedures.

Don't freak out. Your insurance company -- and that of your co-worker -- should be able to iron it all out, if you two cannot come to agreement before contacting them.

Did you tell him in person, or did you leave a note on the car? If you spoke face to face, what was his demeanor like?
It is probably not too late to take photos if you do it ASAP. Do you know where he lives or his number and simply call and say to protect US BOTH, I think we should BOTH take photos.
Did you ever see those commercials for Pops-a-Dent? It is 20-something dollars for this gadget. Pop the dent and return it for a full refund within 30 days.

The Paintless Dent Removal (PDR) guys can work wonders. Ya ever wonder how a busy car dealership can have a huge lot, tightly-packed full of vehicles, but every new car they sell is perfect? Bada-bing: PDR.

Thanks guys. Insurance seems to be a little weird, because I was driving a friends car at the time, but I'm just going to assume it'll all work out in the end. C'est la vie.

It will all work out. Someone backed into me last month and it all turned out well. My car is shiny and back to the way it was before. The other guy's insurance picked up the $4k to return my car to its former glory.

Your accident sounds pretty minor and the cost will probably be less than the deductable on your friend's insurance. The person will most likely not try to rip you off. They just want their car back to the way it was before the accident.

Trucks require dents like humanoids require potassium. It just adds character and aids in stamina. Anyone who owns a truck who thinks otherwise is a total pansy.
