See when (or if) your name was ever popular [More:]My given name was #4 in 1940! I was born in 1962. At least, in the U.S.of A.
My full first name (Jonathan) seems to have peaked in popularity in the 80's. I never liked it. I kinda wish I'd been named after my father (Joe). He was named after his dad, though, and says he hated being a "Jr."

Worrying, that.

Dirk is not in the top 1000 names for any year.
Please try again.

Wow, shocker!

The name Dirk makes me think British Secret Agent. tr33hggr, are you hiding something from us?

I wish. Trenchcoats, an air of mystique . . . but alas, no. Story goes when my mother was preggers with me she went to a movie with my dad and one of the characters was named Dirk. She liked it, and so it stuck, even though it is not my first name.

My first name has been steadily fading since the 1950s -- it's now in the 500s.

My name had a good run- it was in the top 50 from 1880-1910.

And it's been downhill ever since- currently ranked #587.

My stupid name has been #1 or #2 (mostly #1) every single year since 1954 and in the top 10 since 1943. Thanks, parents, for dooming me to a lifetime of answering people when they're talking to one of the other 5 Mikes in the room.

An interactive version of the "popular name" for the year that I originally found through MeFi and still love is here

my name has gotton steadily more popular over the course of my lifetime, from 680 or so to right around 100 the past few years.

"Your tongue is strangely changed; but the name sounds not unfitting so. Carson! No report that I have heard does justice to the truth." (not really)

HOW COOL! My name was at it's lowest popularity (200+) at and before the date of my birth, then steadily waxed to popularity in the mid-70s, and has waned back down below 150 since. A perfect up-n-down curve.

Now if there's a plague on all those damn '70s Shanes I'll be back to having some uniqueness again.

See also. Not to be nasty; I just don't feel like repeating myself.

My name was at #141 when my parents were born, but then in the seventies it shot up to #10, and then #3, and now it's at #4. Which explains why there were always at least three guys with the same first name in all of my classes in school.

Weird.

Mine was #9 in 1957 but seems stuck around #40 these days. How fitting.

The name Dirk makes me think "Svlad".

#648 in 1971 (when I was born) and #72 in 2001 (its most popular).

My parents were ahead of the curve, looks like.

Makes me think of "Gently."

My name's been in the top 10-20 for decades, but I run into surprisingly few Andrews/Andys/Drews.

Shane, I have a brother named Shane, too. He was born in '71. And my hubby's sister-in-law has a nephew, aged 7, named Shane. Maybe it's on the rise again?
My name was never super popular, though it did crack the top 100 the year I was born ('66) at #81. If it didn't have the "e" on the end, it would have been higher up. Funny thing, my mother hated the nickname my name naturally slides into, which I now prefer for myself.

My parents named me "Danny" on my birth certificate. All these years. . .the only answer I ever got from them was that it seemed like a good idea at the time.

Daniel seems like it's always in the rotation, if not way up there on the charts.

Highest was #2 in 1955, today it's #662. I went to school with a lot of girls with one version or another of my name.

Three of my brothers share names with men who have posted in this thread.

Mine wasn't ever in the top 1000 until that damn TV show came out. From 98 on, though, it's like #500, 600. Curses! Although maybe that will mean that people think I'm 35 years younger than I am.

Great pet naming site. || Tacky, but nevertheless ingenious.
