Life's tough for the handicapped in Taipei. This certainly keeps those pesky wheelchairs off the sidewalk!
I'd bet most wheel chairs zip right over those middle bars but step thru style scooters and those electric carts old people use are thwarted.

A standard wheelchair could make it through, but it would be a pain since unless someone's pushing you they're not exactly easy to get around in quite so precisely.

A motorized wheelchair (of the sort that most anyone who'se looking at the rest of their life in a wheelchair will have) most likely won't, as the battery will get in the way.

This is my brother's blog BTW. I was there when he took that picture, and when we saw that we wondered about the guy who installed the bars right behind the handicap sign... what the hell was that guy thinking? At least cover the sign up first!
