Game Shows My one and only is The Orignial Match Game with Gene Rayburn (available on GSN). You?
I did not know that. I trust you are not "playin" me. Ha.
It does rool. Brett Somers, Charels Nelson Riley, Richard Dawson. Not to mention Betty White, Fannie Flagg, and Marcia. . whoever (Cross?). But it was really all Gene Rayburn, all the time.
Seriously, it's really funny, and a for real representation of the time period. Tune in and tune out with MATCH GAME.
I KNOW Hugh! Many times it seems as though Brett and Charles are drunk. And the whole thing was very Twee? Fay? Gay? I dunno, it's just funny funny stuff.
I was watching it the other day, and thinking that none of those women would be famous enough even for a game show now, because they're not good-looking enough. They look too real, and they're over 40.
I also laughed heartily at Gene Rayburn's suits and hair, and wondered why in the 70s he never struck me as possibly being gay, and now he does.
Bret Somers was married to Jack Klugman, a fact which never fails to fascinate me. What a pair!
True, suits! GOD! How did we NOT see how awful they where. Also, it is so true that the panelists where likely tanked during the show. Dawson ALWAYS looked ready to tip over!
OH, and don't for get Arti Johnson, he was veeery interesting.
Are you KIDDING, iconomy? Betty White is beautiful! And smart! And... and... MY MOTHER'S AGE! OhgodwhathaveIdone?
Anyway, I like playing "Guess the Intoxicant" during that show. Dick Dawson is always drunk, and I think Betty's not far behind. Bret Somers is wasted on pot and coke. CNR is on a cocktail of pills and speed and enough alcohol to keep his lid on. Gene is the least drunk, I think. I bet some inappropriate shit went down before tapings.
And how about all of the euphemisms, and all the sexual innuendo? I can't believe they got away with that stuff in the 70s. Like, the questions would be something like:
Jay was spent. He had spent half an hour playing with his________, and it really wore him out.
And then there would be 30 seconds of tittering, and a few seconds of close-ups of Charles Nelson Reilly and Bret Somers making faces, and then the camera would pan to Gene Rayburn, whose eyebrows would be furiously pumping up and down, and he would have a Cheshire cat grin on his face.
And then of course everyone would say 'new puppy'.
Gene Rayburn = Jim Carrey (?)
Dick Dawson = Clooney (?)
Charles Nelson Reilly = Bill Murray
Brett Sommers=
Betty White = Betty White!
Fannie Flagg =
Johnny Olson =
Who else is there?
Milton Bradley issued three editions of the ’70s version of the game in the middle part of the decade. It’s nowhere near as fun as watching the show, and is only really of use as a collectible. The find is actually the ’60s box game, which went through six editions. For actual game play, it’s the far better value.
