Logo hypertrophy [askmecha] Why is it that every company I design a Web site for wants its logo to occupy half of the page?

This is one of the most common things I run into as a designer. How can I convince the latest company that it's not a good idea to splatter their (unattractive) corporate logo across the entire top of the page?
My usual approach is to find pages in their industry that do it right, and show them to the client.

This is (I understand), a problem doing small-client ad copy too, especially on radio.

They want it to be all "Futterman's Carpet Warehouse! Futterman's Carpet Warehouse! FUTTERMAN'S CARPET WAREHOUSE!!! When you think 'carpet warehouse', think Futterman's Carpet Warehouse!"

Maybe give reasons why it isn't a good idea? Point out other valuable info that can be displayed in the space a giant logo would occupy? Put them in te position of a potential client who wants to knwo what they do, how much, how to contact etc etc first, not see a giant logo? Suggest they save giant logos for their tshirts?

Show them Edward Tufte's books.

I think it's best to use their insecurities against them; whatever business it is, show them the nice site of an obviously superior competitor that doesn't have a giant logo. If you don't want to be that obvious, just show them a bunch of clearly successful (high-profile) business sites and point out that all have certain elements in common: pleasing color schemes; user friendly navigation; not-huge logos.
