West Coast Mecha Trivia: Starting at 1030pm EST / 730pm PST. Fifty percent shorter and streamlined edition in four rounds of gut-wrenching nonsense. Answers to *all* questions from this game and previous game will be posted in this thread, though refer to previous thread for rules.
thanks, moonbird.

When you post the questions and answers here... if it's not a pain in the ass, could you separate them, or else make the answers really small? (I want to look at the questions first without seeing the answers!)

BTW, doing this was hard. Whoever wants to by QM or help next time would be more than welcome to. There were some minor harrumphs with the answers, just try not to get all fiesty about it, since we're just playing a silly little game on IRC. I did the best I could to provide accurate info. Now, for the Q&A for both versions of tonight's games...

Shout-out question (no point value, just for fun): Finish this line in a song from Monty Python: “Aristotle, Aristotle was a bugger for the ___________” (bottle)

3. During World War II, what type of western music was ordered temporarily not to be played in Japan? (Jazz).
4. In what South American country is Hinduism the largest religion by plurality? (Suriname)
Bonus (2 points): What is that country’s official language? (Dutch)

6. The dark, weird and quasi-militaristic band “Laibach” hails from what country? (Slovenia)
7. The Metafilter users “andrew cooke” and “signal” live in what country? (Chile) Bonus (2 points): In that country right now, what is a major current event?
a) civil unrest b) famine c) presidential elections d) border dispute C
8. What Daft Punk song might suggest a theme for this round? (“Around the World”)

Shout-out question (no point value, just for fun): Adding a miniature onion to a Martini turns it into a what? (Gibson)

Round 2: This round’s on me.

1. Of two prominent adversaries during World War II, one was teetotal, and one was a heavy drinker. Name these well known leaders (Adolf Hitler and Winston Churchill).
2. 2. Two part question: Either correct answer is worth one point. For Yanks: In the Blues Brothers movie, what brand of beer is recognized in a sign hanging on the wall in the soul food restaurant scene (with Aretha Franklin)? This beer ceased production in 1996, and their Milwaukee factory sits vacant to this day. (Blatz)
For Euros: What is the word used to describe the plastic ball in a can of Boddington’s? (widget)
3. The Pisco Sour is the national drink of what country? (Peru)
4. Completing this song lyric will give you the title of a song by The Replacements:
“All I wanna do is drink _______________
All I wanna eat is them BBQ chips
All I want is someone just to try to protect us
You can try but you'd never wanna try to defend us...” (beer for breakfast)
5. Does drinking lower or raise body temperature? (Lower. There is an illusion of increased heat because alcohol causes the capillaries to dilate and fill with more warm blood).
6. By an act of Congress, what is the official alcoholic beverage of the United States? (Bourbon) I accepted all reasonable variations
7. How does the phrase “minding your Ps and Qs” relate to the consumption of beer? (Pints and Quarts)
8. From what popular film did this exchange originate: “...you can walk into a movie theater and buy a beer. And, I don't mean just like a paper cup, I'm talking about a glass of beer. And, in Paris, you can buy a beer in McDonald's. You know what they call a Quarter Pounder with Cheese in Paris?”
“They don't call it a Quarter Pounder with Cheese?
“No, man, they got the metric system, they don't know what the fuck a Quarter Pounder is”.
“What do they call it?”
“They call it a Royale with Cheese.” (Pulp Fiction)

Speed Round 3: Metatrivia – *four minutes* to receive all answers. Double point value. The fifth question will be posted in the final (third) minute of the round.

1. What website became the first blog of the #mefi IRC channel? (Free Quonsar or 9622- I’ll take both)

3. Treasure Hunt: Guess in what month and what year did Metatalk premier? (March, 2000).
4. Which Metafilter user is an editor of Wired magazine? (either digaman or Kevin Kelly, who's a former editor)
5. Treasure hunt: you may use the internet to find this answer. You have one minute. According to a popular domain name search site, what is Metafilter’s IP address? (70.86.84.162)

1. Treasure Hunt: What is the name of the spiral arm in the Milky Way galaxy where this solar system resides? (Orion)
2. What is the pseudonym directors use when they would rather not have their actual name attached to a film? (Alan Smithee)
3. What was the only new sport debuted at the 2004 Athens Olympics? (women's freestyle wrestling)
4. A music video (listed as one of the best for 2005) for a European group features a band of children roaming through the country side with a drummer boy, with the band ultimately charging a cliff and flying over the ocean. What is the band? (Sigur Ros)
5. Which bird migrates up to 20,000 miles in a single year? (Arctic Tern).

TIEBREAKER: B Movies: What horrible 70s horror film featured Ernest Borgnine as Satan? (Devil’s Rain)

TIEBREAKER: What country currently holds the EU presidency? (Austria)

Oh, finally, about half of the questions were omitted for west coasters, in the interests of time. I also allowed several of those questions to use your google-fu, because I realized after the first go that it was far harder than I thought.

We did find user 32,060, I believe. Too lazy to recheck.

Right before the game, blogrrrl was the last registed member. Matt may have input a batch after the game commenced.

For the record, the harrumphs irked me. (And I'm not just saying that because I won on a technicality)

I know moonbird put a lot of work into this, and the harrumphing is, well, rude.

I'll do the next one, and the harrumphers will have hell to pay. That is for sure.

I rushed out of irc quickly last night, so didn't properly get a chance to say thanks, moonbird. I had a lot of fun.

sorry about being all demandy about the scoring... just trying to enter into the spirit of competition

Oh and I'd be happy to be QM another time.
posted by gaspode 12 January | 09:46
Thanks so much for doing this, moonbird, it was a blast. I hope we didn't give you too hard a time. ;) As mudpuppie has already called dibs on running the next one, I'll take some time to put together my List of Impossibly Hard Questions, for use in a subsequent Feats of Trivial Trivia.

Apologies if my gentle ribbing was perceived as harrumphing.
