What's engraved on your iPod? I hate making these decisions.→[More:]My parents gave me money to order an iPod as an early birthday present. I'm brainstorming engraving ideas, and would be delighted to hear what you've got on yours. So far the best I've come up with is, um, my name. (It's like getting a tattoo. I've wanted one for years but just can't bring myself to commit on something that will be etched into me for all eternity.)

There was a thread about this on AskMe a while back. I decided not to get anything engraved on mine, because I'd probably just end up regretting it or wishing I had picked something else.

My lack of a nickname is one of the reasons why I use my real name on the internet. I am The only nickname I can recall having is "Hanson", bestowed upon me by the Virginia Tech Crew Team, back when my hair was long. That one will not be going on there, for obvious reasons. (Boy, was the team mad when I cut my hair off. Them: "What are we supposed to call you now?" Me: "How about 'Mike'?")

I never saw the point of an engraving on the iPod, the shiny back is going to get all scratched to hell from use anyway, why waste money on an engraving that'll be illegible in six months?

But, if you must.

I got my name on mine, and if I had to do it again, I'd put my phone number and/or e-mail on it, too, so that if I ever lost it, someone would be able to return it to me. (I found an iPod once, and I would have returned it, but there was no contact info on it...)

Mike, I didn't link to the AskMe thread to imply that you were lazy or that you should have checked there first. No biggie, silly wabbit. I thought you might like to see their answers. My favorite was "send help, I'm trapped inside this iPod", although it would be a zillion times cooler if it could somehow be engraved backwards.

TPS: Thanks, I think I will probably end up doing that. I'm the opposite of creative, and practical is the next best thing (or at least in the top 5).

TPS, did you check to see if there were any contacts on the iPod? I've got most of my address book loaded into my iPod. Not that I'd ever expect a lost iPod to be returned but its handy if I forget my Clie.

I had my drivers' license engraved on it. Should make it easier to find if someone steals it and tries to pawn it.

the only ipod I've owned thus far was given to me by someone who bought one and hated it, so I don't have anything engraved on mine. But since it's broken and I'll be getting a new one eventually, here is what it will say:

NOT FOOD.
DO NOT EAT.

UPDATE!! The iPod has been ordered (it's a black nano) and shipped this morning. I went with the contact info and "reward if returned". Practical won out over silly/creative. Thanks everyone!

fenriq- I checked the iPod- nothing. It was practically empty of music and had none of the special stuff turned on. The way it was engraved made it appear that it was a corporate gift, and I tried Googling that, but nothing came up. I posted a Craigslist ad, too, and nothing.

I didn't so much find it as see someone lose it. The woman dropped it between the subway car and the platform as she was getting on the train. I said, oh no, that's awful, you should get out and they'll get it for you! She's like, eh, I don't want to be bothered. I'm like, no, really, they will get it out for you..... I was on my way somewhere, but decided if it was still there when I got back, I would get it out. And it was and I did and I gave it to my Dad.
