Yeah, I've driven through it too. It's prettier than WI-50 now that the latter is four-laned, but 50 is faster. And navigating Burlington is a task even if you've been there before.

As noted, it's named for Richard I. Bong, Wisconsin's WWII ace. The rec area surrounds what was once Bong Field, an early Army Air Force training area.

Bong was from Superior, where they have a Bong Ave. and a Bong Bridge.

It was supposed to become an air force base in the fifties, but it never happened so they made it a recreation area instead, named after an area hero...
