MetaChat, Please Advise Now that I am getting my condo, I am looking at furnishings. I really really like this rug. It is white. Am I doomed?[More:]

My mother says, "Hey it's on sale. You like it. If it gets too dirty, you can replace it in a few years."

My boyfriend is okay with removing his shoes ad keeping his feet clean.

Another friend says, "It is white. You live in New York. Don't be dumb."

I don't know what I say. What do you say?
Well, if it were me, buying a white rug would be like building a special machine that's set to automatically kick me in the balls in three weeks. But I've heard that there are cleanly people out in the world somewhere so YMMV.

That's gorgeous. You are indeed doomed. I say screw it, get the rug. Listen to your cuddly mother.

Well, it's not that expensive and owning a white rug is the sort of thing that one should do once in a lifetime if only to learn never to do it again. The "professionally clean" means that yes, you are doomed, but as long as you know that then I vote to get it because it's cool.

Doomed? Does your dog drag his ass across the floor?

Buy it! It's not so expensive that you'll kick yourself if you have to replace it.

Do it!

You are doomed, at least if you're anything like me. [Things that I have dropped on my carpet include an entire open jar of honey, acrylic paint, an entire container of exacto knives, several varieties of beverage, and mineral oil.] You might be able to prolong its life by putting it in the room furthest from the front door and making sure that it's the sort of room that mostly has things like books in it, but...

[you might as well get it.]

Do you have a cat? If so, don't get the rug; if not, do.

Cat puke will IMMEDIATELY stain any wool rug, white or not.

Other pertinent facts: it's a studio, this is for the living room, I have no pets and few guests.

Buy the rug, never leave the house, wear kleenex boxes on your feet and start bottling your urine.

You are, indeed, doomed. Buy the rug anyway.

buy it, it's cool! Take a photo on the first day so you can remember it when it looked pristine. Never wear shoes in the house.

You're not doomed. But it is.
Unless you want to commit to cleaning it regularly.

Me, I wouldn't do it; I have a white tile bathroom floor, which is the very worst thing about my flat. Literally within seconds of cleaning it, it starts looking dirty again. To keep it nice, I'd have to wash the floor two or three times a day.

In your position, I'd keep searching 'til I found a rug I liked even better, that wasn't white, because here's what's going to happen: The rug will be beautiful for a few days, or a week, or maybe even a month, then the first little spill will occur, and you'll quickly wipe it up, and it will be barely noticeable. But you will notice it.

Every. single. time. you. look. at. the. rug.

Then the next small spill... And so on. And the wincing anytime someone walks on it with their shoes on... and all the stupid worry about something that is supposed to make your life nicer and more comforting.

(Lots of words on a white rug, eh? I had an insane exmother-in-law who insisted on having expensive white wall-to-wall carpeting in her living room; oh, the agony! The recriminations! The discussions! It was an entitity, I tell you - an evil entity!)

I reckon it's nice, if you like it then get it and enjoy it, if it does get doomed, then you will probably have some memories and it can always be replaced.

I got it. Coffee will only be allowed at the kitchen table now.

Thanks for helping me throw caution to the wind.

Good. You're not doomed. Just don't wear shoes in the house. (Which I never do. Feels weird to be indoors with shoes on. Must be my Asian past life echo.)

It is beautiful. And of course you're doomed: you've been dying since the day you were born, but that hasn't stopped you yet. Therefore, buy it and enjoy it.

Did someone say, "Doom?"

Stunning. Doomed. Get it anyway. Everyone should have a white rug/furniture experience. It's a learning thing. ;)

It's lovely. If you are one of those people who never wrecks or loses your things, then buy it. I am one of those people, so I have a cream-coloured couch that I've had for four years and it still looks pristine, though everyone told me I was crazy when I bought it.

Get some Ikea "absorb" stain remover (or whatever kind the carpet seller thinks is good) and go for it. I have a light light grey wall to wall wool carpet that really has seen better days in this office (it must be ten years old) but even that looked pretty good after a good steam when we moved in. Sadly, I'm Ms. trip over anything and spill entire buckets of coffee on the floor - so don't ever invite me home.
