MetaChat is an informal place for MeFites to touch base and post, discuss and
chatter about topics that may not belong on MetaFilter. Questions? Check the FAQ. Please note: This is important.
I really like how he didn't officially close the thread right away, which gave you a false sense of hope that you could still post to it. What a sneaky bastard he turned out to be.
I so totally tried to slip in a "NOOOOO!!!!" before the database caught it and switched it closed. Alas. I have grown old and feeble. Pass me my gruel and soursop.
It just takes a little time before the thread is actually closed, and a lot more time before it's actually marked closed from the front page.
I'm going to assume that the time delay between it actually closing and being marked closed is about the same as the time delay between comment count updates. Say, 30-60 seconds or so. Maybe a little more, depending on server load and everything AND EVERY DAY IS CAPSLOCK DAY YAAAAAAAAAR.
Also, if you were insinuating that I'm unsober, I'm sadly not. Sleep is not what I need. This ongoing problem can be most easily remedied by offering me strong drink and smoke.

To think I'm just about to go meet a potential contractee at a Starbucks and have my first coffee in two weeks.
Luckily I get to play up the geek-of-all-trades role.
Nah, he's not going to ban me. I'm generally well behaved and civil and shit, plus I write a fair amount of good stuff there when duty calls and I'm inspired. It's not like I'm linking goatse.cx or attacking people or anything. He does have a sense of humor, y'know. Besides, he was the first person to add me as a contact, and he has my IM. I'm going to assume he'd msg me first.
AWP is a sniper rifle type weapon with a zoomable scope thingy. At least it is in my limited experience from CounterStrike. It's a common yet comical complaint.
Whiny little kids like to bitch about people using the gun too much because an accurate head shot from any distance is one shot, one kill - whereas you can sustain hits from many, many rounds from most other guns anywhere else on the avatar's body. But repeatedly using the AWP from a single position and holding that position takes a fair amount of skill.
Spawn-point "camping" I can understand bitching about. That's just poor sportsmanship. But bitching about using the AWP or tactical camping in general is like bitching about the sky being blue. It's part of the tactics of the game. If they don't like it and want to run around like retards in a nonstop killfest, they can play a killbox map. (Frankly I've enjoyed being a retard in those kind of maps, too, and I rock at them.)
Disclaimer: I haven't played an online FPS in like 4 years. Though I've been playing me some Perfect Dark on the N64 lately.
um - it's kind of hard to explain without links, but I'll give it a shot.
Basically, you know the picture of W writing the note that he hadda go wee? We all know it, everyone that has a computer or a telephone knows about it, and the MeFi thread where it was first posted got up to about 150 comments. Fine.
It got double-posted. It got flagged, and was deleted.
It got triple-posted. It got flagged, and there were a few jokes about being "last post!" It eventually got deleted, and poppy (or someone like that) had the last post before it was deleted.
Then it got quadruple-posted. The floodgates opened; no one was even flagging, it was just massive attempts to be the last post, even from upstanding members of the community (much like myself) who you wouldn't expect would go in for such shenanigans. There were quite a few hilarious bits, but the comments were coming about fifteen per minute, so it was a little hard to keep up.
Finally, either Matt or Jess deleted it, and mystyk had the last post (with about 350 in the thread). Someone else started a MetaTalk thread congratulating mystyk, and before it got up to 50 comments mathowie deliberately posted bad html (which broke the comment box) and said "I won".
