I feel so violated... Last week I didn't even know it existed. I found out through MeCha, and then asked a simple question and a very kind soul from MeCha emailed it to me.→[More:]
For the past week I had my apartment closed up, my headphones on, and this song playing over and over again, only to me. Now, the world knows, and it isn't mine alone anymore.
I'm talking about the Iron & Wine version of Such Great Heights, which is now the soundtrack for an M&Ms commercial.
What are some moments in your past, where a great privacy has been exposed to the world?
And if you're talking about stolen musical moments, that would be two Superbowls ago, in SFO, waiting for my plane, I walked into a bar to hear Cult Hero's (aka The Cure) "I Dig You" on a Monster.com commercial.
The sting was lessened by the fact that I really like Monster.com.
About a year ago, there one week in the local paper there was an article about Red vs. Blue and then the following week an article about people getting together to play Settlers of Catan.
I was forced to say to myself "Well, quite so far out on the edge of culture as we thought we were, are we?"
I remember when I used to chuckle to myself at one of my favorite Simpsons moments, "I, for one, welcome our new insect overlords" from "Deep Space Homer." Then MetaFilter discovered it, and I soon grew to hate it and all its progeny.
Can't get into carcasonne, but settlers is great. Me and the missus picked up Spacefarers of Catan (2-player) but have yet to give it a go. Will let you know if it's any good.
I, for one, welcome our new catchphrase-hating overlords, but, honestly, translatorcap, it was being well overused (and overlorded) in many other webplaces before it invaded MeFi. Just be glad MeFi has been so selective in its adoption of Simpsons clichés, and don't have a cow.
Of course, I grew weary of "Curse you, [fill in name here]" about 23 years ago.
I too felt terrible hearing that song in a commercial. The sting was lessened by my love of M&Ms...I'm trying to break my habit of spending way too much time lurking here and on Mefi while finishing off a medium size (14 oz I think) bag of peanut M&Ms!
