29 December 2020

What do you miss? With all that has happened in 2020 what do you miss? It occurred to me that it is not the people I am closest to that I miss most. It is acquaintances and just recognize folks I miss. [More:]

Sure it sucks not to hang out with friends and family but we do keep in contact. Not optimal but it is what it is.

I really find myself missing the less tangible human contacts. People who live, work, or own businesses in my neighborhood. Some I know by name and some just by sight. Some I talked with to some length and others were just 'hey how is business?' or 'the roses look good!'.

It is that random not friends but we recognize each other local contact that I crave.
I miss getting together with friends for a night of euchre. We occasionally play together online, but it's just not the same by a long shot.

I miss easily popping into a store to quickly grab something; and it's usually in stock. Now, I maximize trips and wrar the madk, try and keep distance and find 1/8th of the stuff I want is out of stock or an off brand that's not what I really wanted. So, I have to put it back on the forever growing list.

Otherwise, I am still interacting with people at work and didn't do any social activities before, so that much is the same.

I miss my friend's piano bar. In a crowded restaurant basement, everyone crammed in side by side, with a host (always a musical theatre performer), an incredible accompanist at the piano, and a clipboard for people to write down their name and choice of song (anything, as long as it's from a musical show or film).

It's always so much fun, with singalongs, some amazing performers, some not so good, and, once the West End theatres turned out at around 10.30-11pm, a bunch of performers coming in to wind down, and show off a bit. I've made some lovely friends there, and I miss the atmosphere, the fun and the music. There's something about hearing someone sing a song so beautifully that it silences the crowd so you can hear a pin drop that fills my soul with joy.

That sounds amazing, Senyar.

I've decided the thing I miss most about the Before Times is being able to go into a bar and having a chat with an old friend or a complete stranger. I miss those days.

I notice I'm not the only one.

A piano/ singalong bar? sounds fantastic. My life had taken some difficult turns, then Isolation happened. I miss being able to see people casually, just going out and about. I miss my Folk Dance group, Zoom dancing just doesn't cut it. Zoom get-togethers are horrid when you have bad hearing; hearing aids don't resolve this. I want this to be Over. I want my vaccine. Meanwhile, I Stay Home, because most of the US is a Hot Zone of Virus and Stupidity. I cook all the time, but have kept my weight pretty stable, though the Holiday treats haven't helped. So happy to see the end of 2020.

So looking forward to the Inauguration.

I miss being able to go out to dinner for a special occasion. Even if it only my spouse and I the process of planning, making a reservation, getting dressed up etc. was unexpectedly important to me.
