11 February 2017

So the recent post from johnpowell got me thinking. It has been a long time since we have talked about our animal friends. How are your non human companions?
Whitey Ford is doing alright.

When cancer killed Kitty, Whitey seemed awfully lost. Most of Whitey's life was following Kitty to see what he was doing. Since then he has developed no new interests and just follows my wife and I when he isn't cleaning or sleeping. He likes to be with someone most of the time.

On the up side he has lost weight and looks a lot trimmer. It seems he just ate a lot because Kitty ate a lot. Kitty was very much a type A personality and burned off the calories but Mr. Ford is decidedly on the casual side of a type B.

Lucy turned 15 in September, and she seems to be doing just fine. She's on a special diet for her overactive thyroid, which means no cat treats, no bits of bacon, no cheese. But I put some of her diet food in the cat treat container, and she doesn't know any different, she thinks it's a treat and acts just as excited as if it was a Whiskas treat.

She doesn't stray out of the garden too much. In the summer she has her favourite hot spots to lie in, and in the winter she sleeps on her beanbag in front of the radiator, or, if I leave it lying around, on my jute shopping bag, which she loves.

Since Bailey, her mother, died a few years ago, Lucy has become more affectionate towards me. She likes to lie next to me, or leaning on my arm, or touching me with her paw. Sometimes it can be a nuisance, but I'm conscious that she's in the last few years of her life, so I try to enjoy as much time with her as possible.

Our kittens are settling in nicely. They love to cuddle and wrestle together. In the evening hours, Flotus sits with Marc at the desk and Finn cuddles with me. His-and-hers cats.

We've had our cat Annie since November (went to the shelter the day after Election Day) and she has gone from being extremely shy to friendly and sweet.... But, she's peeing where she shouldn't be (on a sofa, on an expensive suit, to name a few places) which may turn out to be a huge issue if I can't figure it out. Trying unsuccessfully to get a urine sample to rule out a medical issue, and dispensing Feliway every which way. Second cat in a row with inappropriate elimination issues, and honestly I could do without the added stress right now.

I have two cats. Sadie, member #1 of the Calico Cabal, is sitting on my lap right now making it very difficult to type this. Victoria, member #2 of the Calico Cabal, is still in bed; once she gets comfy she doesn't move until she's good and ready.

They each have a favorite toy. Sadie likes this stuffed rectangular thing with a tail on the end. She kneads it with her feet while yowling. We call it Conservatism and applaud her for stamping it out. Victoria's favorite toy is a large stuffed rat. She carries it about, shakes it, and emits The Cry of Triumph.

As out cat, Luke, gets older (he's about 15 or so now), he has become more and more needy. It's almost impossible to keep him off you anymore, no matter where you are. He has come to see bedtime as "climb on top of my humans and sleep" time, which he does all through the night. He also won't shut the hell up. If you're in view, he'll start chattering away at you until you're out of sight again, at which point he might start in with this baleful mrooowwwww as he prowls the house looking for you, sometimes with a toy mouse in his mouth.

The pups will be 7 this year and thankfully both are in good health. I rearranged the house for the baby so Blake is happily sleeping in my room now while Sienna comes and goes. Blake is good with kidlet petting him now so it'll be interesting to see how they feel about the baby. I suspect it'll go like last time -- Sienna will be surprisingly ok with baby's attention while Blake will want nothing to do with him.

Our remaining pug, Pooka,is settling into the new house quite nicely. She is quite pleased that she sleeps with us, and will spend as much time in the bed as possible.

Mr. Munch, our rex rabbit, loves his new room, where I have set up a fenced in area for him, and I have a chair in there, so that I can sit in there and read or watch Netflix and keep him company. On the weekends, he has free run of the area, but during the week, he gets closed up in his cage while we are at work.

The young monsters, Jeeves and Wooster, are taking over the house.

Ms. Nibs is the unfortunate focus of Bertie's many attacks. She just doesn't have any idea of fighting back and he thinks she's a good target.

To dissipate some of their over abundant energy, I built a 20'x20' 'kitty kompound' outside.... it's more like an Olympic training facility since they have more stamina now. Sigh.

Our gorgeous Aussie is getting older but still has lots of peps, barks and cuddles left. The two kittens I got for my husband at Xmas -- after we unexpectedly lost both our adult/elderly cats this past fall -- are already young cats, and they are destructive, delightful, demented and darling.
