Friday Question NOT from the Book of Questions: Book Edition part 2 So, what's the worst piece of writing posing as a book you've tried to read this year? Flame it here.
Hands down, for me, Go Set a Watchman wins this award. It is absolutely the most racist (and sexist) screed I've read for some time. Harper Lee really is disconnected from modern reality, or she never would have let this book be published. Indeed, I would have advocated that she burn every page.

I love To Kill a Mockingbird. Until I read Watchman, it was unquestionably my favorite book ever, and I had read my original copy so many times it literally fell apart. I don't know how I feel about it now. Not only is Atticus revealed as a committed racist in Watchman, but Scout (who is generally unendurable anyway) is too. She just gets upset when Atticus and her (racist) would be fiancee are willing to sit quietly through a Citizens Council presentation that is cartoon level racism. No worries, she forgives Atticus at the end because basically they all agree on the benighted state of those poor people of color and the evil path the evil NAACP is taking them down.

Just writing about this book makes me feel like taking a hot shower. Maybe more than one. If you haven't read it, skip it.

Ugh, everything I have heard about that book bums me out.

This is an easy one for me - The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo by Amy Schumer. I like her comedy and I bought it on a whim after hearing a recent interview of her by Howard Stern. But yuck, what a piece of garbage it was.

H is for Hawk by Helen McDonald. It was one of my book club books. It had good reviews, and although most of the book group loved it, I found it unreadable. Awful, turgid, dense pretentious prose.

It's over a year now, but The Interestings. Toilet paper.
